The Arizona Department of Transportation is advising drivers to plan for overnight closures on Interstate 40 – about 16 miles east of Flagstaff – as work continues on the Winona bridge rehabilitation project.
ADOT reminds drivers to slow down and observe posted speed limits and other construction signs while the following restrictions are in place:
- East- and westbound I-40 will be closed from 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, to 6 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12.
Drivers will use the on- and off-ramps at the I-40/Townsend Winona Road interchange (milepost 211) to exit and re-enter the highway.
Townsend Winona Road will also be closed at I-40 while the highway closure is in effect. Motorists traveling on Winona Ranch Road needing to access westbound I-40 will detour eastbound on I-40 to Twin Arrows (milepost 219). Motorists traveling southbound on Townsend Winona Road can use Cosnino Road to access I-40.
The closures are needed so crews can continue rehabilitation work on the Winona bridge that crosses over I-40. The work consists of replacing the bridge superstructure and full depth of the pavement, striping, signing, guardrail, cattle guard and other related work. The 277-foot steel girder bridge was originally constructed in 1967.
The bridge rehabilitation project is scheduled to be completed by fall 2020. |
