KinderCamp began in 2005 after a survey identified early childhood learning as a major concern in the region. The initial partnership between UWNA and the Flagstaff Unified School District has grown over the years to include school districts throughout northern Arizona, including Williams, Pinetop-Lakeside, Page and Winslow. Children are referred to the program, which is offered at no cost to families.
In addition to day-long classes in June, each KinderCamp instructor meets with the child’s parents or caretakers, providing them with a bag of school supplies, including a literacy kit with children’s books and learning activities.
The cost to run the four-week program is more than $600 per child, with anywhere from 100 to 250 children participating each year.
