UWNA Hiring Northeast Representative
United Way of Northern Arizona (UWNA) is recruiting for a new Northeast Representative position as part of a strategic plan to address critical needs in Navajo and Apache counties.

The position will serve as the local point of contact for a region that includes the towns of Winslow, Holbrook, Snowflake-Taylor, Show Low, Pinetop-Lakeside, Springerville, Eagar, St. Johns, and Concho. A full description of the position and its requirements can be found here.

Historically an economically challenged area, the region has faced a reduction in jobs due to power plant closures, as well as a dramatic increase in population, which has led to a shortage of affordable housing, increased rental costs, and increased needs.

A recently completed strategic plan by UWNA identified substance abuse/mental health issues, affordable childcare and afterschool programs, and creating a skilled workforce as top priorities for the northeast region.

Funded by a significant donation from APS, the plan is a roadmap for UWNA to not only help its nonprofit partners continue their work in the region, but also to help them build capacity and sustainability.

“As a major employer and utility provider in northeastern Arizona, as well as the owner/operator of one of the coal-fired power plants slated for closure, APS is committed to supporting the region in its transition away from an economy reliant on coal-fired power plants,” said Janet Dean, Senior Public Affairs Manager for the Northeast Division of APS. “As we looked at the potential impacts to the region, we were concerned for the vitality of the nonprofits that are doing such important work for the residents in Navajo and Apache counties.”

As a long-time member of the UWNA Board of Directors, Dean said she knew UWNA could step up and support the area.

The new position will help implement a “collective impact model” – engaging a network of organizations, community members, nonprofits, and institutions that align and integrate their actions to achieve meaningful change in the community through a shared vision, measurable outcomes, and effective communication.

A grant from Salt River Project (SRP) to UWNA is providing the initial support to add this position to the UWNA team.

“The United Way of Northern Arizona helps build resilient communities by educating and empowering them to address regional needs and develop new solutions,” said Andrea Moreno, SRP’s Community Stewardship Program Manager. “SRP is proud to partner with them as they help advance communities in Apache, Coconino, and Navajo Counties.”

The study and hiring a staff member based in northern Arizona are the first steps in UWNA providing an invaluable service that will strengthen the region.

The position will be open until filled. Review of applications will begin on July 28. If you or someone you know might be interested, the full job description and application process is linked below.
