There’s nothing more frustrating than receiving robocall after robocall to our landlines and cell phones. I, like you, receive many of these calls each week, often from a phone number that seems to be just down the road.
Worse even, many of these calls are scams designed to prey on seniors and vulnerable populations that are more susceptible to this kind of fraud. Scams like these are often incredibly believable, and put the private information and hard-earned dollars of Americans at risk.
This week, the House took action to put an end to bad robocalls by voting to pass the Telephone Robocall Abuse Criminal Enforcement and Deterrent (TRACED) Act, a bill I cosponsored and helped move through the Energy and Commerce Committee to the House floor. This legislation cracks down on scammers and bad robocalls by creating real penalties for violators, requiring voice service providers to develop call authentication technologies, and holding the FCC accountable by requiring them to enforce these policies and do their part to protect American families.
The legislation passed out of the House with broad, bipartisan support.
I believe that stopping bad robocalls is an initiative on which we can all agree, and want to hear from you on this issue as well. I encourage you to share your thoughts with me by filling out the survey in this email.
Sincerely,
Tom O’Halleran
