Theatrikos Presents Hilarious Classic Farce
July 2023
Lend Me A Tenor, Running July 21 to August 13, is Full of Slamming Doors, Mistaken Identities and Comic Wackiness
Theatrikos Theatre Company brings the classic farce Lend Me A Tenor to the Flagstaff stage. This 9-time Tony Award nominated—with two wins!—side-splitting classic farce is full of madcap setups, mistaken identities, room swaps, hilarious misunderstandings, bawdy overtones and quirky characters that make this gloriously fun.
“Lend Me A Tenor, written by Ken Ludwig, is a finely-crafted romp in the classic style of the 1930s comedies. A crisp, fast-moving, quirky laugh fest is the perfect late summer entertainment. With a talented cast and crew this production is sure to be a hit,” said director John Propster.
Premiering on London’s West End in 1986, on Broadway in 1989, revived on Broadway in 2010, and set during in 1934, the comedy has a slapstick Marx Brothers hilarity. Broadway.com called the 2010 Broadway revival, “The most howlingly funny and ingeniously staged laugh machine to hit Broadway in years.”
Taking place in an extravagant Cleveland hotel, this show depicts the comic pandemonium that arises when a superstar tenor from Italy arrives for his debut performance with the local opera company. The opera star ends up in a drunken stupor and everyone thinks he’s dead. So, the theatre’s mild-mannered assistant must frantically take his place. Or does he? And what about the bellhop?
Performances of Lend Me A Tenor are at Theatrikos, July 21 to August 13, 2023.
“The acting was excellent in the show this weekend and the show was hilarious.”

Lend Me A Tenor Cuts a Rug
Hold on to your hats! Lend Me A Tenor, written by Ken Ludwig, is a Tony Award-winning screwball farce in the classic style of 1930s comedies. Director John Propster predicts that “this crisp, fast-moving, quirky laugh fest is a perfect late summer entertainment with a talented crew that is sure to be a hit.”
It portrays the comic chaos that ensues when a superstar Italian tenor arrives to perform with a local American company. He is late and, through a set of crazy circumstances, passes out after mixing wine with tranquilizers. Believing that the tenor is dead, the excitable opera manager taps his hapless assistant, an aspiring singer named Max, to suit up and replace the star. Meanwhile, the tenor’s jealous wife, his ambitious co-star, Max’s girlfriend, and the flirtatious head of the opera guild all conspire for the star’s attention. What follows is a whirlwind of mistaken identities, romantic complications, and frantically slamming doors reminiscent of a Marx Brothers production.
Actor Jeff McCarroll recommends this show “because it is a different brand of comedy than most of us are used to. You can harken back to a simpler time and enjoy the magic of live theatre!” “Lend Me A Tenor is a side-splitting and high-energy comedy that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats,” declares actor Casey Russell.
And best of all, says assistant director Susan Chastain, “Lend Me A Tenor has a little bit of everything–marital squabbles, father/daughter mistrust, love, adulation, ambition, sex, competition, and mistaken identities. What could go wrong? Everything. What is funny? Everything!”
According to actor AJ Flores, you are going to laugh harder than you ever have!
Playing at Theatrikos July 21-August 13.
