When 200 world leaders signed the Paris Agreement in 2016, they pledged to do everything possible to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. But scientists—including NAU’s Ted Schuur—have some sobering news to share: We’ve already exceeded 1.5 degrees of warming, and we’re well on our way to reaching 2.7 degrees of warming by 2100. Why did we pass that threshold so much sooner than we imagined? It’s partly to do with what’s happening above the Arctic Circle.
