Last year, 158 years after Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed all enslaved people, President Joe Biden deemed that day a national holiday, allowing the freedom of all U.S. citizens to officially be celebrated. This weekend, join in on a variety of events that honor the past, present and the hope for a more inclusive future.

Sage Bond made her Carnegie Hall debut with an original composition entitled “Truth,” performed alongside the National Concert Chorus. This performance marked a milestone in Bond’s career as a young Indigenous musician and composer. Her journey from the Navajo Nation to her studies at NAU highlights her passion for showcasing her cultural heritage and promoting diversity in the arts. The time surrounding her composition profoundly impacted her— the song addresses pressing issues such as justice, identity and resilience, aiming to inspire unity. Bond’s story is a testament to the power of self-expression and the pursuit of dreams as she continues to make a difference in the music industry and works toward bringing music education programs to her community.
