Sept. 17 — Sedona Arts Center, MNA to present ‘Moving from Appropriation to Authenticity ‘ at the Museum of Northern Arizona
Sedona Arts Center (SAC) and the Museum of Northern Arizona (MNA) announce their collaboration to bring a series of panel discussions to the region on the topic of appropriation of Indigenous art and culture with funding provided by Arizona Humanities.
The three panel discussions are scheduled for:
September 17, 2 PM at the MNA; November 5, 2 PM at the MNA; and January 21, 2024, 2 PM at SAC.
This series of panel discussions complements the Arizona Humanities’ mission in several ways. The talks aim to expand the audience’s understanding of what constitutes authentic Indigenous art versus art that has appropriated aspects of Indigenous culture, and to create deeper connections between artist, culture, and community. By contextualizing the role of the Indian Arts and Crafts Board and the Indian Arts and Crafts Act, the boundaries of Indigenous artists’ intellectual property and agency over representation will be explored. By framing each discussion with questions that attendees can adopt in their evaluation of how to engage with Indigenous cultures and art, an enhanced knowledge will foster their ability to appreciate and differentiate authentic representation from appropriation. Panelists will be a diverse complement of Native and non-Native experts, representing a mix of traditional, contemporary, accepted, and challenged perspectives on Indigenous representation.
Through Oct. 28 — 19th Annual Sedona Plein Air Festival

“Our Plein Air Festival is a premier destination event and Sedona Arts Center’s signature fall event,” said Julie Richard, CEO of Sedona Arts Center. “Everyone is invited—residents, visitors and art lovers of all ages—to observe professional artists in action painting this wondrous place outdoors or “en plein air.”
Sedona Arts Center — ‘Tis the season for year-end-giving
The arts are fundamental to our lives – whether we always realize it or not. They foster civil discourse, understanding, and critical thinking – as well as fostering creativity, empathy and joy. The arts bring great economic benefit to our community through cultural tourism, education and connection.
There are so many reasons to support the arts – not least of all are the personal relationships built through our organizations. While we are back in person conducting events and programs, impacts from the pandemic are still felt.
We at Sedona Arts Center are definitely still feeling the effects.

Sedona Arts Center December News
Happy Holidays! I can’t believe the holiday season is full upon us. It seems like just yesterday we were wrapping up the Plein Air Festival!
This week we open the Big Gay Art Show (BGAS). While the Big Gay Art Show has been held at the Arts Center for many years, this is the first time the show is “ours”. Sedona Pride developed and organized the show for many years and only held the exhibit at the Arts Center. They reached out to us shortly after I arrived here and offered us the program. We jumped on it! Typically, BGAS has been held over the Fourth of July weekend, lasting only a few days. And while we had planned on doing the same, our schedule, with other programming already planned, did not allow us to do that. By moving it to December, we could actually have the show up longer and coordinate it with Celebrate Sedona.
Sedona Arts Center — Special screening with artist George Anthony Morton this Friday
An HBO documentary Film, “Master of Light”, will be coming to Sedona for a special impact screening with artist George Anthony Morton at the Mary D. Fisher Theater on Friday, Dec. 2, 2022.
The screening is free of charge and presented by the Sedona International Film Festival, Sedona Arts Center, and Northern Arizona Restorative Justice.
“Master of Light” follows George Anthony Morton, a classical painter who spent 10 years in federal prison for dealing drugs. While incarcerated, he nurtured his craft and unique artistic ability. Since his release, he is doing everything he can to defy society’s unlevel playing field and tackle the white-dominant art world. Now, back in his hometown of Kansas City, he’s on a journey to break cycles of intergenerational trauma and incarceration, too.

Sedona Arts Center — 18th Annual Sedona Plein Air Festival starts this weekend!
Sedona Arts Center invites you along to be inspired and experience master artists painting in the Shangri-La of the Southwest! Sedona is a sublime and stunningly beautiful environment steeped in art history. Sedona Arts Center October Update
There is a definite feel of fall in the air and a sure sign of the season is the flurry of activity we experience leading up to the Sedona Plein Air Festival at the end of the month.
There is so much going on in Sedona right now – every weekend is filled with activity. We are hoping the events and festivals will draw more tourists in to town as we are definitely feeling the effects of fewer people around. For instance, traffic to our Gallery was down by half over last year during September. This directly impacts our bottom line. Since about 80% of our earned revenue comes from tourists, we are watching this closely.

Sedona Arts Center — SAC February News – Celebrate Sedona rescheduled
Due to impending weather, we cancelled Celebrate Sedona originally scheduled for Wednesday, February 2. BUT we have a new date – Wednesday, February 9 – same time (4-6PM) in our parking lot.
This Celebrate Sedona was programmed to coincide with Vision & Sound: An African American Experience which opened on January 28 and will run until February 25 here in Sedona. An Additional exhibit will run until April 4 in Goodyear.
Vision & Sound is unique in a number of ways. First, we are partnering with the City of Goodyear and the City of Glendale – both of whom will be hosting events and exhibits throughout the month. Second, Sedona Arts Center is holding several artist talks and demonstrations here that celebrate black artists and culture. And finally, the work in both exhibits – here and in Goodyear – all tell a story. It is not art for art’s sake but art that provokes, celebrates and inspires the viewer to think more deeply about the history of our country, its cultures and its people.
