Feb. 15 — NAU Latin American Studies to present ‘The Life of the Mind and a Mind on the Move: Action and Advocacy in Academia’

Dr. Rima Brusi, Professor of Anthropology at NAU will present “The Life of the Mind and a Mind on the Move: Action and Advocacy in Academia,” at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5 at Northern Arizona University, Room LA-120, building No. 18.

Using the theme of education in Puerto Rico as a case study, Dr. Brusi will explore from various disciplines and methods, including cultural anthropology, what “access” means in higher ed research, what it means to do “public” or “applied” scholarship, and why it is sometimes necessary to use multiple methods.

Sept. 14 — NAU Latin American Students to present ‘History In the Headlines: Climate Migration’

FLAGSTAFF — NAU Latin American Students will present “History In the Headlines: Climate Migration” at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14 at NAU, Liberal Arts 120.

This History in the Headlines Event features Dr. Maria Cristina Garcia, Howard A. Newman Professor of American Studies at Cornell University. 

Dr. Garcia’s talk will address the relationship between climate change and migration patterns, especially as these issues pertain to those traveling from Central America and the Caribbean to the U.S. Garcia will highlight case studies from Central America and the Caribbean to demonstrate the misconceptions and failures of US immigration policy and the changes that must be made in order to address the human devastation caused by climate change paired with environmental and political catastrophe.

NAU to present ‘Human Rights Across the Americas!’ in-person, Zoom presentation on Dec. 5

On Monday Dec 5 from 11am-12:15pm in the Blome Conference Room (and on Zoom) we are hosting a roundtable discussion with a Human Rights Across the Americas group through the State Department’s international visitor leadership program.  This is a unique opportunity, especially in Flagstaff, to hear from a diverse group of Latin American Human Rights activists! All students, staff, and faculty are welcome and translation will be provided.

NAU Latin American Studies to screen ‘Fandango at the Wall!’ on March 9

On Wednesday March 9 at 4 pm in LA 136 Latin American Studies will screen the film Fandango at the Wall. This beautiful and thought-provoking film features a journey through Mexico to explore a 300 year-old Mexican folk tradition–son jarocho—a binational fandango festival on both sides of the US/Mexico border, the conditions of life in Mexico, and the politics of migration. The ultimate message of the film is the triumph of unity through music over division.

Feb. 23 — NAU Latin American Studies to present ‘Black Women, Citizenship, and the Making of Modern Cuba’

NAU Latin American Studies will present Takkara Brunson and her  recently-published book “Black Women, Citizenship, and the Making of Modern Cuba” at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23 on Zoom.

Brunson traces how women of African descent were essential participants in the political processes that defined Cuba well before the 1959 Revolution.

Sept. 21 — NAU Latin American Studies presenting ‘The Politics of Extraction: Territorial Rights, Participatory Institutions, and Conflict in Latin America’

Dr. Maiah Jaskoski, Professor of Political Science at NAU, will present her new book, The Politics of Extraction: Territorial Rights, Participatory Institutions, and Conflict in Latin America” at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21 at Northern Arizona University, Room LA-120.

Presented by NAU Latin American Studies.

Oct. 7 — NAU Latin American Studies to present talk on ‘Dancing with the Revolution: Power, Politics, and Privilege in Cuba’

NAU Latin American Studies will present Assistant Professor of History Elizabeth Schwall will talk about her recently published book, “Dancing with the Revolution: Power, Politics, and Privilege in Cuba” at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7 and LA 120 (and simultaneously via Zoom).

The NAU Bookstore will be at the event with copies of the book for sale, and I’m sure Elizateth would be delighted to sign a copy for you!

Jan. 28 — NAU Latin American Studies to present ‘Mala Conflicion’ Zoom lecture

In its first event of the semester, NAU Latin American Studies will present ‘Mala Confición: Forced acculturation & spiritual surveillance in the Confesionario limense (1585)’ Zoom lecture at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28.

Molly Borowitz is assistant professor of Transatlantic Early Modern Literature and Cultural Studies in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Georgetown University. Her talk examins how a 16thcentury text taught religious leaders in colonial Peru to control indigenous people by treating actions that the Spanish Crown wished to discourage as religious crimes.   

Feb. 18 — NAU to present via Zoom ‘The Deportation Machine: America’s Long History of Expelling Immigrants’

Adam Goodman from University of Illinois, Chicago will present his recent book, “The Deportation Machine: America’s Long History of Expelling Immigrants,” via Zoom on Thursday Feb. 18 at 6 pm. In the words of Mae Ngai, the book is “a must-read for all those who care about the reach of state authority and its consequences for immigrants and citizens alike.”

March 4 — NAU to present ‘Departed to Death — Asylum, drug violence and immigration enforcement on the U.S.-Mexico border’

Jeremy Slack, professor of geography at the University of Texas, El Paso, will present the virtual lecture, “Deported to Death: Asylum, Drug Violence, and Immigration Enforcement on the US Mexico Border,” at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 4.

The Immigration Awareness Series event is co-sponsored by Latin American Studies and the student club NAU No More Deaths / No más muertes.

March 17 — NAU Latin American Studies to present ‘Severo Sarduy: Fatigue and the Tempo of HIV/AIDS’

Johnathan Vankin, Assistant Professor, Latin American Cultural Studies and affiliated faculty at the UArizona Institute for LGBTQ+ Studies, UofA, will present “Severo Sarduy: Fatigue and the Tempo of HIV/AIDS.” The presentation is an examination of the relationship between illness and time in Sarduy’s final novel, Pájaros de la playa.

March 22 — NAU Latin American Studies, NAU No More Deaths to present ‘Human Rights Crisis in the Borderlands’

On Monday, March 22 at 1 pm, the Colibrí Center for Human Rights will talk about the human rights crisis at our southern border and their work to find justice. This presentation is put on in partnership with Northern Arizona University No More Deaths and the NAU Colibrí Campus Ambassador.

March 24 — NAU Latin American Studies to present ‘How We Get Free: Women, Tango, and the Power of Fiction’

Award-winning author Carolina De Robertis will present, “How We Get Free: Women, Tango, and the Power of Fiction.” This GLC talk is co-sponsored by STAC and The Office of Inclusion here at NAU.

April 7 — NAU Latin American Studies to present Chilean musician/composer Freddy Vilches will present ‘Suite Latinoamericana: Vernacular and Concert Music’

NAU Latin American Studies will present Chilean musician/composer Freddy Vilches “Suite Latinoamericana: Vernacular and Concert Music” at 3 p.m. Wednesday April 7.

Join NAU Latin American studies for a Zoom event featuring Composer Freddy Vilches, as he performs selections from Suite Latinoamericana and discusses how he recontextualized elements of Latin American New Song in the symphonic composition. The event is free and open to the public, but RSVP is required.

Chilean poet, Raúl Zurita, has brazenly challenged the conventions of poetry, art and politics over the course of his career.

Latin American Studies, NAU No More Deaths to present journalist Todd Miller during Zoom presentation on Sept. 21

The NAU Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Latin American Studies, and NAU No More Deaths announce journalist Todd Miller will provide a presentation via zoom on Monday, September 21 at 5pm.

Todd Miller is an independent journalist living in Tucson. His work has appeared in many media outlets, including the New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and The Nation. He is the author of three excellent books: Border Patrol Nation: Dispatches from the Frontlines of Homeland Security; Storming the Wall: Climate Change, Migration and Homeland Security; and his newest book Empire of Borders: The Expansion of the US Border Around the World.
