The summer solstice is upon us, a moment of solar peak in the cycle of Earth’s seasons and a time for annual reflection.
LAUNCH Flagstaff began in 2014 as an ad-hoc gathering of interested stakeholders seeking to improve educational outcomes for our community’s children. With the leadership of the Coconino County Superintendent of Schools and the backbone of the United Way of Northern Arizona funding was secured in 2016 from the Arizona Community Foundation of Flagstaff to initially fund a staff position for the then fledging idea that is now LAUNCH Flagstaff.
I am honored to have been chosen to serve our community in that role and am proud of the work that LAUNCH Flagstaff has accomplished over the past five years.

LAUNCH Flagstaff — We’re Counting on You – Thank You!
I ended my first email by saying that with your help we can make a difference in the educational outcomes for every child in Flagstaff. So, I’ll start this final email by focusing on you.
I mentioned that LAUNCH Flagstaff is foremost an idea that leverages existing community organizations, businesses, policy makers, and citizens that produces systemic changes through collaborative action.
The changes we seek happen in the hearts and minds of each person and each organization in Flagstaff. I thank you for your current level of engagement in this important work and I invite you to consider additional ways you can help improve outcomes for our kids.
Here are some ideas:
LAUNCH Flagstaff — Educational Executive Leadership Development
25% of a student’s educational success relies on the quality of the educational leadership of the school administrator. This means that the school principal is the second most important school influence on student success, after high quality teaching.
Great school leaders create a culture of excellence, drive school performance, teacher retention and student outcomes. The partners of LAUNCH Flagstaff recognize the critical need for executive leadership developmentcoupled with the building of collaborative, collegial relationships among educational leaders across the community.
This is why LAUNCH Flagstaff partnered with the Center for the Future of Arizona (CFA) in 2017 to bring their educational executive leadership training to Flagstaff.
LAUNCH Flagstaff — We’re Making a Collective Impact
LAUNCH Flagstaff — Achieving equity in education and our society
The mission of LAUNCH Flagstaff is to advance equitable access to world-class education for every child in Flagstaff. By definition, equity is the state of being just and fair and it is the context through which the partners of LAUNCH Flagstaff take their collaborative action. This is easier said than done, because achieving equity often requires the non-equal distribution of resources
The truth is that to be successful in achieving equity in education, we will have to make significant progress in undoing the historical injustices and ongoing inequities imposed on Indigenous, Black, and Latino peoples by White people through the colonization of this land.
Current events have once again brought America’s history of racism and state-sanctioned violence against people of color to the surface. We have an opportunity to collectively examine our personal and institutional beliefs, practices and policies, questioning their origin and their validity.
LAUNCH Flagstaff Update: Career Exploration + Plus
The stay-at-home orders aren’t holding back the partners of LAUNCH Flagstaff in advancing world-class education for every child. We are also using media technology in collaboration with our educational partners to help middle and high school students explore potential career and educational pathways.
Learn more about that and a couple other education things that caught our interest.
Be well,
LAUNCH Flagstaff monthly update
April is Child Abuse Prevention Monthand this is top of mind for me as we move through the COVID-19 pandemic and the looming economic recession that will likely follow. The stress today on our families is unprecedented and my fear is that some children may bear the brunt of that reality.
The Coconino Coalition for Children and Youth recently published their Prevention Plan & Needs Assessment. In the report, Virginia Watahomigie CCC&Y Executive Director says, “We can no longer say-this is not my problem. The effects of childhood trauma have tremendous costs to society, and it is imperative that we develop the understanding of why and what can be done.”
