Reminder — Coconino County Board of Supervisors to read proclamation at 6 p.m. Oct. 15 honoring life of CHAC founding member Miguel Vasquez

FLAGSTAFF — The Coconino County Board of Supervisors will read a proclamation at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2024 honoring life of Miguel Vasquez, who passed away on Sunday, Oct. 6.

Vasquez Ph.D, Professor of Anthropology (Emeritus) Northern Arizona, was a founding member of the Coconino Hispanic Advisory Council (CHAC).

A native of San Francisco, he recently retired as an applied anthropologist who worked with Latino, Mayan, Native American, African American, and disabled adult communities for almost 50 years. He was recognized as an NAU President’s Distinguished Teaching Fellow. In his 32 years at NAU, he taught nearly 12,000 students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, according to his biography on the county’s CHAC website.

Tri-Diverstiy Councils visit County’s Election Center in Flagstaff to learn about voting security, procedures

FLAGSTAFF — Members of the Tri-Diversity Councils, which included the Coconino Hispanic Advisory Council (CHAC) and the Indigenous Peoples Advisory Council, visited the Coconino County Election Center in Flagstaff to gain information on ballot security for the Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024 General Election.

A team of election officials answered a wide variety of election-related questions during the nearly two-hour tour.

Participants were able test the system using KNOWiNK PollPadsfor registration validation and then submit via traditional ink-marked paper ballot or ExpressVote Marking Devices to submit sample votes. None of the electronic equipment is connected to the internet.

CHAC, community to celebrate 2024 Flagstaff 4th of July Parade

COCONINO COUNTY — Thousands of visitors crowded into downtown Flagstaff during a warm summer day to celebrate the 2024 Annual Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce/Nackard Pepsi 4th of July Parade on Thursday, July 4, 2024.

Members of the Coconino Hispanic Advisory Council (CHAC) joined the Coconino County parade entry as part of the 100-plus float event.

FLAGSTAFF — After a several-year delay due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Coconino Hispanic Advisory Council’s (CHAC) finally celebrated it’s sixth annual César E. Chávez Community Breakfast on Friday, March 22, 2024 at American Legion Post 3 in Flagstaff.

The event, which drew nearly 100 guests and local dignitaries, was highlighted by guest speaker Cesar L. Chavez, grandson of the civil rights and farm labor leader, and son of Anthony Chavez, Cesar’s youngest son.

Cesar, who was born and grew up in the farm worker movement, spoke about legacy of the late farm leader and shared personal memories including joining his grandfather to picket lines and demonstrations in the Central Valley plus cities such as Los Angeles and San Diego. They went on hikes together in the mountains surrounding UFW headquarters at La Paz.

FLAGSTAFF — The public is invited to attend the Coconino Hispanic Advisory Council’s (CHAC) sixth annual César E. Chávez Community Breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m. Friday, March 22, 2024 at American Legion Post 3, 204 W. Birch Ave., Flagstaff. Doors open at 6:45 a.m.

Cesar L. Chavez, grandson of the civil rights and farm labor leader and son of Anthony Chavez, Cesar’s youngest son, Cesar was born and grew up in the farm worker movement. He accompanied his grandfather to picket lines and demonstrations in the Central Valley plus cities such as Los Angeles and San Diego. They went on hikes together in the mountains surrounding UFW headquarters at La Paz.
Cesar presently oversees network functions such as musical and educational programming, and traffic (commercials and public service announcements) for the Cesar Chavez Foundation’s extensive English- and Spanish-language communications network.

“We look forward to this opportunity to gather with the community after our long hiatus,’” said CHAC Chair Patricia Garcia. “At this year’s breakfast, we will kick off a year-long project to collect and preserve information about the experiences and contributions of the Hispanic community of Coconino County during the pandemic.”

CHAC, County Diversity Council to participate in Flagstaff Holiday Parade of Lights on Dec. 9

FLAGSTAFF — The Coconino Hispanic Advisory Council (CHAC), the County’s Diversity Council and other supporters will participated in the annual Flagstaff Holiday Parade of Lights at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9 in downtown Flagstaff.

Presented by the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce and the Vora Financial Group, the parade features more than 60 entries.

CHAC, community celebrates 2023 Flagstaff 4th of July Parade

FLAGSTAFF — More than 90 entries took part in the annual Flagstaff 4th of July Parade presented by the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce.

This year’s festivities began in the far northern reaches of Beaver Street, through downtown and up through San Francisco Street.

Members of the Coconino Hispanic Advisory Council (CHAC) once again took part in the annual event, participating with the Coconino County entry.

Diversity Councils take part in Coconino County 2023 Diversity Day celebration

FLAGSTAFF — Members of Coconino County’s Diversity Councils took part in annual Coconino County Diversity Day celebration held Wednesday, June 21, 2023 at the Coconino County Courthouse Lawn, Flagstaff.

The event included information booths presented by a variety of groups including various Coconino County departments including Parks and Recreation, the Coconino Hispanic Advisory Council (CHAC), the Intertribal Advisory Council, the Peace Corps, Northern Arizona University’s Office of Inclusion and other organizations.

The Diversity Book Drive, in partnership with the Flagstaff City-Coconino County Public Library. will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, April 30 at the Flagstaff Public Library Downtown, 300 W. Aspen Ave., Flagstaff.

NAU Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with Hispanic Heritage Game on Oct. 16

Northern Arizona University is excited to celebrate its Hispanic Heritage Game as Lumberjack Football takes on Southern Utah.

CHAC presents César E. Chávez Community Award to Vietnam veterans

The Coconino Hispanic Advisory Council (CHAC) presented its 2020 Cesar E. Chavez Community Recognition Award to Vietnam veterans at the American Legion Post 3 in Flagstaff on April 10, 2021.

The award will now remain on display at the post.

The presentation was delayed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

All are invited to join the Coconino County Diversity Council Meetings in August, which aim to connect our diverse communities with their local governments.

The Councils include the African Diaspora Advisory Council, the Coconino Hispanic Advisory Council (CHAC) and the Indigenous Peoples Council. A joint meeting of the three councils is held every quarter.

2020 Hispanic Heritage Month Continues in Coconino County

The Coconino County Board of Supervisors recently proclaimed September 15 – October 15 to be Hispanic Heritage Month. Coconino County recognizes and honors the important contributions of Hispanics and Latinos in our community, said District 2 Supervisor Liz Archuleta.
