Painterly Portraits in Pastel
with William Schneider
March 24 – 26, 2021
Learn how to loosen up! Pastel can be the most expressive medium…if you understand how to use its unique properties.  Most artists admire the evocative, sensuous brushwork of oil painting masters like Nicolai Fechin, John Singer Sargent, and Anders Zorn. But creating those bravura effects in pastel is another matter.

In this three day workshop you will learn:

  • A technique to create oil painting Master, Nicolai Fechin’s broken edge effects…in pastel!
  • How to create sparkling color
  • How to simplify
  • A sure-fire way to achieve masterful edge control
  • Power through suggestion
  • The key to color harmony
  • How to turn the form with temperature

Paper Paintings: Fabulous Florals
with Elizabeth St. Hilaire
April 23 – 25, 2021
During this comprehensive three-day workshop you will learn a unique figurative mixed media collage technique. Students will draw florals from their own still-life setup or photograph; modifying it to create a compelling, fun composition. We’ll cover how to paint your life drawing with full range of fun, bright colors and shading. You will then learn how to hand-paint your own collage papers through a series of gel plate mono-printing techniques in the color palette inspired by your underpainting. After creating your ‘paper palette’ you will learn various techniques for tearing and applying the paper in a ‘painterly’ manner. Emphasis will be on defining form using light and shadow, and treating every torn tidbit of paper as a brush stroke. Students will create impressionistic collages that look like paintings. Elizabeth will also cover how to keep your pieces perfectly flat without cockling and how to vary your paper ‘brush’ marks strategically in size and shape. .

Monoprint | Collage | Painting
with Jane Davies
October 15 – 18, 2021
Discover a whole new world of artistic possibility when you combine collage and paint with monoprinting techniques. First, we will layer colors, patterns, and textures with the gel plate (synthetic gelatin printing plate, available from various manufacturers) creating gorgeously printed collage papers. Then we combine them with painting, drawing, and layering to build images directly on a heavy paper substrate. We will be working in series, which allows fluidity of process, focus, and momentum in your work. Let the boundaries between painting, monoprinting, and collage disappear as you explore this exciting means of creative expression.

The Egg Tempera Portrait
with Koo Schadler
November 7 – 11, 2021
Old as the Egyptians and most famous during the Renaissance, egg tempera painting is becoming increasingly popular with artists today. Tempera has unsurpassed luminosity. Dozens of glazes and scumbles can be applied in a day, and yet the medium also allows for meticulous linear detailing.

Because of its luminosity and fine line work, egg tempera is an ideal medium for rendering the human face. In this workshop you will learn every step of how to develop a portrait in egg tempera, with ongoing individual instruction and critiques from Schadler. Koo Schadler explains the traditional Old Master palette used to develop flesh tones. She will also work on a painting of her own, so you can see firsthand how she develops her egg tempera portraits.

Contemporary Mixed Media
with Joan Fullerton
December 2 – 5, 2021
Join us for inspiring demonstrations, lectures, encouragement and practice. You’ll learn how to coax hints of reality from an abstract background, how to integrate collage imagery, how to control values and colors for emotional emphasis, and how to suggest rather than delineate. You’ll explore working intuitively, responding to what shows up, working in a series, mixing and utilizing neutrals for softer, more ethereal abstracts.
We’ll touch on notions of confidence, procrastination, vulnerability, curiosity, courage, talent, play, inspiration, intuition, your mean critic, metaphor, symbolic elements, competition, marketing, your belief systems, finding balance, and more! There will be plenty of time for “playing” and creating along with individual attention and guidance.
