First Friday in the Gallery

October in our Fine Art Gallery

First Friday Reception October 5, from 5 to 8 pm

Sedona Arts Center continues celebrating the fall season, featuring six fine artists in the Uptown, Sedona Fine Art Gallery this October. Meet your favorite artist at a First Friday artist reception, October 5 from 5 to 8 pm. The exhibit features landscape paintings by Susan Pitcairn, photography by AO Tucker, copper mat and raku works by Jeff Perkins, hand-painted ceramics by Mariann Leahy, jewelry by Sue Horine and portraits and more by Gretchen Lopez. Showing now through October 30, 2018.

Gretchen Lopez

Gretchen Lopez, a tenth generation Native of California, is a descendant of the first Spanish settlers and the California Rancheros, with roots stemming from Chumash and Apache. Her works are inspired by her rich ethnic heritage, which is clearly visible in the gentle beauty of the Native and Hispanic people she portrays. Gretchen is a long-time faculty member and a participating artist in the 14th Annual Sedona Plein Air Festival taking place October 13-20, 2018. She is beloved by her students, art collectors, and the Arts Center volunteers and staff. Her work is vibrant, emotive, and full of immense life.

Jeff Perkins

From thrown clay to large form, thin-walled vessels—to hand-built figures, Jeff Perkinshas been a master of ceramics for most of his life. Jeff studied under Arts Center founder and sculptor Nassan Gobran, who encouraged him to pursue art in clay form. He went on to teaching at Verde Valley School for over 30 years. Influenced by ancient and primitive art, Jeff takes ordinary clay and brilliantly produces large, thin-walled vessels in organic copper mat and his signature black and white naked raku. His style is spontaneous and intuitive, letting the thrown work develop into large cylinder forms that defy the imagination.

Mariann Leahy

Artist Mariann Leahy’s inspiration comes from ancient myths and symbols. Using clay that contains a mica-rich surface, she carefully paints stories with glazes on fired clay. Each piece is painted with multiple coats of glaze to create vivid colors during her second firing process. Mariann combines human and animal motifs in her highly-symbolic works.

A O Tucker

As a self-taught artist, AO Tucker believes that fine art photography must both be inspiring and technically excellent. Born and raised in Arizona on farm land, he learned to be self-sufficient in all things, including his art. His independence is evident within the stories he tells through his photography.

Susan Pitcairn

Local artist, Susan Pitcairn fuse inspiring poems with her vibrant landscapes in oils, acrylics, and pastels. Her poetic images hold symbolic meaning, revealing her own universal truths. Raised in Phoenix, Susan began painting the beauty of the Southwest in her teens. She majored in fine art at the University of Arizona where she trained in oils as well as pastels. Her style is described as impressionistic renditions of the beautiful landscape she is inspired by. She is particularly passionate about the spiritual purpose of art: to inspire and uplift.

Sue Horine

Sue Horine has been creating bead embroidered art jewelry since 2005. She was born in California and much of her inspiration comes from her childhood family vacations to the Southwest and Sierra Nevada Mountains. Primarily self-taught, her beaded jewelry has become easily recognizable as her style has developed from her love of nature and the scenic stone cabochons she incorporates in her work.

A Creative Travel Journal
Stan Fellows

October 21–22

This is a joyful, two-day workshop for curious, adventuresome artists and non-artists to learn the skill of unhurried observation. Doodling a map for someone, you go for clarity, not art, right? Slow drawing works in a similar way: It quiets the mind and lets experience saturate us. A chance to relish rather than rush and put any art ideas aside. The goal will not be finished products. There won’t be sharing of journals or critiques. But you will discover practical, everyday tips on how to observe more than you ever imagined possible – all through non-art drawing. You need no artistic skill or even a passing interest in art. We may dabble in watercolor but only in a day-dreamy manner as a fun way of decorating pages. All Materials Included!

Paper Painting — Animals and Pets
Elizabeth St. Hilaire

October 21–23

Elizabeth will guide you through working on a mixed media collage portrait of man’s best friend – not limited to dogs or cats! Plan to work on whatever “pet” makes you happy, birds, fish, ferrets included!

During this comprehensive 3-day workshop you will learn a unique figurative mixed media collage technique. Emphasis will be on defining form using light and shadow, and treating every torn tidbit of paper as a brush stroke. Students will create impressionistic collages that look like paintings.

Create your hand-painted paper palette through Gelli Plate printing, staining, stamping and patterning that will be torn up and glued down over an acrylic under-painting. This class is focused on learning and growing creatively in a FUN environment. No prior collage experience is necessary. Some painting experience is helpful. All levels are welcome.

The Inspired Abstract
Julie Bernstein Engelmann

October 29–31

Using Julie’s unique layering technique, you will enter the painting process naturally, ease into personal intuitive marks and forms reflecting your inspiration, and weave exquisite depth and beauty. Then, Julie will help you see the spirit of your painting and gently enhance its drama and spatial flow (composition) so it can shine powerfully.

You’ll leave with two acrylic paintings that each embody three vital keys to powerful and successful abstract painting: meaning, naturalness, and spatial depth and flow. Along the way, you’ll gain discernment, refine your composition and color skills, and come to see and understand abstract painting more deeply.

Abstracting the Landscape
Claudia Hartley

November 8–10

Learn to exaggerate and personalize color to create your own version of the unique modern landscape. Using photos of scenes, students will learn how to plan a good composition and how to mix beautiful clean colors. Students will learn how to take advantage of the quick drying properties of acrylics and how to create vibrancy through color combinations.

Activating Negative Space
Vince Fazio

November 10–13

This exploratory step-by-step workshop takes you on a unique journey all your own! Guided collage exercises are followed by composition studies using your collages as subject matter. We’ll also do some writings on the collages to establish the mood of the work, building the backstory for a final painting. We then explore a process of drawing and layering acrylic paint to create a new work in a surprising style derived from subject matter of your own creation. Using the same prompts and instructions each person’s work magically goes off in its own direction. All materials are included.

Painting the Southern Desert
Gretchen Lopez

November 10–12

Experience the history of Arizona and the beauty of the Southern desert, as we paint in and around the first European settlement in the region. Tubac is a wonderful go-to destination where we will study capturing the light and learning to paint the essence of what you see from life. These loose, impressionistic oil sketches can be seen as stand-alone artworks or studies for studio work later on. Most sites are within walking distance from the Tubac Country Inn! But we will also sojourn to the Historic missions of Tumacacori and the fabulous “Dove of the Desert” at the Golden Hour, San Xavier Del Bac all within a 15 minute drive! Oils, Water-mixable Oils, Acrylic and Watercolor are all welcome with the plein-air equipment of your choice.

Sedona Dreamscapes
Jean Bradbury

December 3–6

Taking inspiration from the natural setting of Sedona we will paint the plants, animals and geology that surrounds us, combining them into magical landscapes reminiscent of memories or dreams. We will capture the changing desert light by using copper, aluminum and ‘gold’ leaf. This course combines the rigors of botanical observation with some hippy, drippy acrylic spontaneity. Prepare to sharpen your drawing and observational skills while expressing your love of nature with loose and juicy acrylics. No drawing experience is required. You’ll be amazed how good you already are with a little instruction and a lot of gentle encouragement. Students may choose to include animals that they observe during out time in the workshop such as insects and birds. We will take a few short strolls to see what we can find.
