Elizabeth St. Hilaire

Emphasis will be on defining form using light and shadow, and treating every torn tidbit of paper as a brush stroke. Students will create impressionistic collages that look like paintings. Choose any animal, bird or creature you want! This class is focused on learning and growing creatively in a FUN environment. No prior collage experience is necessary. Some painting experience is helpful. All levels are welcome.

Sedona Dreamscapes
December 3–6, 2018
Jean Bradbury
Taking inspiration from the natural setting of Sedona we will paint the plants, animals and geology that surrounds us, combining them into magical landscapes reminiscent of memories or dreams. We will capture the changing desert light by using copper, aluminum and ‘gold’ leaf. This course combines observation with some hippy, drippy acrylic spontaneity. No drawing experience is required. You’ll be amazed how good you already are with a little instruction and gentle encouragement. We will take a few short strolls to see what we can find.

Intuitive Expressive Painting
February 28–March 3, 2019
Jesse Reno
Imagining the Unimaginable – with Jesse Reno

In this mixed-media painting class you will learn to create paintings that emerge from an abstract base of markings, colors, line, and shape to form expressive and organic creations. You will learn painting and mark-making techniques that will encourage imagery and connection to your work. Through a series of painting exercises, you will explore and express your ideas by imagining what could be created from abstraction rather than confining your ideas to predetermined outcomes

Emphasizing Abstraction
April 5–7, 2019
Stuart Shils
We’ll move through a guided series of exercises to understand that abstraction – composition with color and shape – is THE foundation, the great engine behind all painting. Significant emphasis will also be placed on drawing interactively from art history excising the fundamentals of abstract composition with part of each day spent engaged in a series of exercises using crayons and graphite to complement our examination of form with paints. This is NOT a “copy” class, we will not be copying the superficial appearance of paintings, but rather, trying to get inside and see what they are made of and learning to use abstract shorthand to describe both what is there and also what we see and how we see it. Materials will be crayola crayons, acrylic paints and pencils. On the final day of the course we’ll draw outdoors from life applying the principles we’ve learned.

The Story in the Still Life
April 5–7, 2019
Scott Conary
Every painting, even the humble still life, has a story in it. It’s told by what subject we choose to paint, how we present that subject, and how we paint it. Finding what interests us in a subject and how we connect to it drives that story, and directs how the painting is made. We’ll work on small still life paintings to explore the process – from thumbnail sketches, lighting the subject, considerations of composition, to the application of paint to build form with light, color and mark. We will walk the line between technique and intuition, using the still life as a way to explore paint and why we make art.

Intuitive Collage: Big and Little
April 19–21, 2019
Crystal Neubauer
Increasing the scale of collage work can be challenging. What we find satisfying on a 4” or 10” scale, does not necessarily translate well to 30 or 40 inches. But there are elements in those smaller designs that can be captured when creating large. “It took some time to begin to feel like I was getting it, but suddenly there were breakthroughs, and insights, and more frequent successes. This is what I want to impart to my students when they come to the table. You have everything you need to create satisfying work inside of you. I’ll guide you through the steps I took to tap in to that wellspring of creativity.” Whether you are an experienced artist or a novice, this workshop will dare you to let go of expectations and ignore the rules, beginning with a series of collage exercises designed to infuse freedom into your creativity and help you tap in to that intuitive voice as your personal guide.

Contemporary Mixed Media
April 26–28, 2019
Joan Fullerton
Join us for inspiring demonstrations, lectures, encouragement and practice. You’ll learn how to coax hints of reality from an abstract background, how to integrate collage imagery, how to control values and colors for emotional emphasis, and how to suggest rather than delineate. You’ll explore working intuitively, responding to what shows up, working in a series, mixing and utilizing neutrals for softer, more ethereal abstracts.

We’ll touch on notions of confidence, procrastination, vulnerability, curiosity, courage, talent, play, inspiration, intuition, your mean critic, metaphor, symbolic elements, competition, marketing, your belief systems, finding balance, and more! There will be plenty of time for “playing” and creating along with individual attention and guidance
