NEW WORKSHOPS
Alok Hsu Kwang-han and Tiffani Gyatso
A Brush with Emptiness
and the Art of Being Embodied

October 4 – 6, 2019
Alok and Tiffani will guide us to return to the natural embodiment of our creative intelligence prior to thought. They will inspire us to become intimate and comfortable with not knowing and to give space for the communion of our body-brush to dance from emptiness. No prior experience with painting or with Zen is necessary.

Each morning Tiffani will lead us in a one-hour meditation that combines movement, stillness, and awareness. Relaxing deeply and resting in a spacious presence that is naturally joyful, we become more available to being “present, available, playful and not-knowing”, our methodless-method of Zen creativity. Throughout the workshop she will guide us through exercises or dance to evolve our art of being embodied.

Then Alok will serve everyone very good tea from his home province in China. The subtle delight and alertness of drinking tea together softly strengthens our collective energy field that holds us aware and safe and prepares us for the adventure of painting by “resting in presence and moving from emptiness.”

Plein Air Painting in Sedona
October 9 – 11, 2019

The Joy of Observation!

Each group and each student is unique! My goal is to offer a roadmap that will continue to guide your creative journey long after the workshop is over. To bring more clarity to your work. To learn to paint with intent. To continue the journey from ‘painting’ to becoming a ‘painter’. And most importantly – how to develop the mindset of ‘practice’ that leads to successful ‘performance’.

Day one: I will be doing a demo start to finish, explaining my thought process for each step, aiding you in developing a personal methodology. During the demo we’ll touch on a variety of subjects – drawing, design, value, color, harmonizing your painting, materials and brush and paint handling. We will discuss how to approach your creative process – concept, scene selection and preparation. You will learn the steps that prepare the groundwork for a successful painting.

Day two: Permission to slow down and find the joy! You will have time to work through each of the preparatory steps for creating a painting ‘en plein air’. I’ll be teaching a method not a style. Whether you’re new to plein air or an experienced professional having a structure that allows you to check your progress at each stage before moving on to the next will bring more consistency to your efforts. You’ll avoid a problem, unresolved from an early stage in the process, spoil what otherwise may have been an inspired painting. Start strong! End Strong!

Day three: The day will be devoted entirely to using the preparatory work from days one and two to bring your paintings to completion. Each student will receive individual instruction. The day will be devoted to putting into practice the concepts we’ve covered and allow you to focus on that on the thing that is going to put wind under your wings!

Plein Air Festival Keynote Workshop
Source to Studio

October 15 – 18, 2019
This will be an enjoyable 3.5 day workshop involving painting on-site in the Sedona landscape with an emphasis on capturing atmosphere and depth in your work. Dave’s landscape painting workshops are designed for all levels of ability and focus on concepts and techniques derived from years of plein air painting. Participants should anticipate and be prepared to paint in plein air, at various Sedona locations with a back-up studio available at the Arts Center whenever needed for critique, storage or inclement weather.

Note: This workshop takes place during the 15th Annual Sedona Plein Air Festival and culminates in a demonstration session on Friday morning when Dave will demonstrate his process for developing a studio painting from plein air studies and photos. Friday Evening is the Awards night for the Festival, an exciting evening celebrating the work done over the past 7 days by 25 of the top plein air painters in the country. Dave is the Judge and Keynote speaker for the Festival this year and will present a digital talk and presentation on Wednesday evening. See more about the Sedona Plein Air Festival HERE.

Painting with the Earth Palette
November 1 – 3, 2019
In this intense three day workshop, Lucy MacGillis shares her love for painting and paint, beginning with the creation thereof – mixing raw earth pigments from Italy with linseed oil. Working from life in the landscape, participants learn not only how to create their own paint and mix the colors of the limited earth palette, but are guided in looking closely at the tones they see before them in the landscape. By limiting the range of colors, painters create their own tones and use the relationships of juxtaposing colors to give them more force. With guidance in using the palette knife and earth tones of venetian red, burnt sienna, terra di sienna, yellow ochre, naples yellow, earth green, ultramarine blue, burnt and raw umber, roman black earth, and titanium white, participants work directly from observation of the landscape.

Metal Point Drawing
November 7 – 9, 2019
Three-Day Metalpoint Workshop

The traditional technique of metalpoint (also known as silverpoint; i.e. drawing with a piece of silver) is increasingly popular. This workshop offers students the opportunity to draw with a variety of metal tips including silver, brass, and copper. Koo Schadler will demonstrate and explain all aspects of the medium: types of surfaces to work on, adding highlights and color to a drawing, and how to speed up the oxidation process. Students will make for themselves several different drawing surfaces starting from scratch. Each students goes home with Koo’s metalpoint instruction booklet and a complete metalpoint kit to continue working in the medium. Open to all levels, from beginning to experienced draftsmen.

Painting Pastel Landscapes
April 1 – 3, 2020
This workshop will stress the fundamentals of landscape painting outdoors.

Pastel is a great sketching medium—its consistency of color and quick handling are valuable when working outdoors. The importance of simplifying the landscape and composing on location will be discussed and applied. Theme emphasis, values, colors, edges, emotional involvement, atmospheric and linear perspective will be discussed. All three days will be spent in the field where we can observe and study the outdoors first hand. This is the single most important method for improving landscape painting skills.

Demonstrations will be done for the group and critiques will be conducted on an individual basis. Plenty of personal attention is the goal of the instructor.

Contemporary Impressionism
April 16 – 18, 2020
In many ways, Impressionism still defines the way contemporary landscape painters approach color. The Impressionists filled their paintings with brilliant color and created an entirely new coloristic metaphor for depicting natural light. In this workshop, you will learn the key to working with this “color-priority” system: that in order for the purer colors to serve as a stand-in for the luminosity of natural light, darker tonalities are rejected in favor of lighter-value colors. Strong value contrasts are replaced by color contrasts. Impressionists worked from life, but in this workshop, we will work from photographs, in the more controlled environment of the studio, where you will be able to absorb lessons at a comfortable pace. To place the Impressionist color-priority system in context, we begin with an exploration of the “value-priority” systems that preceded Impressionism, such as the Dutch Landscapists and the Hudson River painters. Then, through a series of exercises and paintings, you will learn how this enduring lesson of Impressionism — balancing value and color chromaticity — can bring greater luminosity to your landscape paintings. Real World Composition
April 20 – 22, 2020
For many landscape painters, composition remains the most elusive area of their practice. Why? Because its energies are fundamentally abstract and often hidden beneath all of nature’s detail and complexity. The goal of this workshop is to make the invisible visible — to discover the underlying energies that drive a composition. We will take a “real world” approach to composition by learning to work with the shapes and forces we actually see. Desert Light: Plein Air Painting
April 24 – 26, 2020
Get ready to explore the desert with award winning artist Aaron Schuerr. Find “the story” in the landscape and paint it in a way that is direct, simple, fresh, and honest. Engage in fun exercises designed to focus on value, color, and shape. From that foundation, you’ll explore edges, atmospheric perspective, color and shape relationships, composition, and mood. Most importantly you’ll learn to paint with greater intention. Through demonstrations, group discussions, composition walks, painting exercises, and plenty of individual instruction, you will learn to approach the landscape in enthusiasm and confidence. This workshop is open to all levels in pastel and oil.
