Sedona Arts Center update for May 10

Opening Reception May 11, 5–7 pm

Sedona Arts Center proudly presents a special exhibition by renowned artist, Kevin Macpherson, Chinese Characters from May 11 to 28 in the Center’s Historic Art Barn in Uptown, Sedona. This unique collection of portraiture, all painted from life, documents Kevin’s recent years traveling China. The exhibition opens with an artist’s reception on May 11 from 5 to 7pm. Plus, join us for a special gallery talk on Saturday, May 26 at 5:30pm to hear stories about some of the paintings as we embark a colorful visual journey.Kevin is internationally known for his workshop instruction and his instructional books on landscape painting and will be signing a new book release during his visits to the exhibition May 11, 5 -7 pm and May 26, 5 – 8 pm.  All too often upon viewing a painting we can only imagine the thought process, the techniques employed and the reason for an artists’ work. Kevin’s books teach us the visual language to see as an artist, perhaps opening doors to your own creativity. Many artists and art lovers have noticed that understanding painting has opened their eyes and given them a renewed, almost childlike way of using all their senses to observe the beauty around them.

Vince Fazio Executive Director of the Sedona Arts Center says that “Kevin Macpherson’s books are ‘must haves’ for artists working in the landscape realm or at all interested in painting from life. They leave you with an understanding of light and shadow, color and atmosphere, shape and pattern that give a true appreciation of the art of painting and its intimate relationship to nature.”

Free Community Plein Air Event
at L’Auberge de Sedona
Wednesday, May 16, 9–11 am

Explore a lovely creek side venue complete with artists working from nature!

L’Auberge de Sedona is hosting and sponsoring the “Creekside Paint-Out” produced monthly this spring and summer by the Sedona Arts Center. The first of the series is Wednesday May 16, from 9–11 am.

The event is free to the public and you are invited to watch artists as they complete plein air paintings or drawings in any medium, along the banks of Oak Creek at L’Auberge de Sedona. Artists will set up along the L’Auberge Creekside with subject matter ranging from calm to rushing water, foliage, sky and reflections, architecture, people, and ducks! Artists can begin working upon arrival with a hard stop at 11 am. Finished works will be displayed as a group using artist’s own easel and they may be for sale. The Arts Center will present an award at 11:15 am and will process any sales from 11–11:30 am.

Red Rock Magic Trolley is also sponsoring the event, as parking is very limited at the resort, there will be a shuttle for artists and the public from the Sedona Arts Center lower parking lot to nearby L’Auberge resort, back and forth from 8 am to 1 pm, leaving plenty of time after the event for lunch at Cress on Oak Creek, the lovely creek side restaurant at L’Auberge de Sedona.

This event will be repeated throughout the Spring and Summer. Additional dates are June 13, July 18, Aug 15 and Sept 19th there will also be a special paint-out as part of the Sedona Plein Air Festival on Oct 17th.

Information for artists:

The event is open to all artists – including painters in oil, acrylic, watercolor, etc. and to artists working in graphite, charcoal, colored pencil, etc. To participate, members of the Sedona Arts Center register for free to paint or draw, non-members pay a $10 per artist registration fee. Although not a requirement, we do encourage work to be offered for sale and also to put up for judging. This is a great way to gain some experience in plein air competitions with very low commitment and it adds excitement to the onlookers. Artists who wish to offer their work for sale should consider bringing along a frame to pop their piece into so it is ready for the customer to take home and hang on their wall. Register HERE or call 928-282-3809 to register.

Schedule:

8 am -1 pm: Red Rock Magic Trolley will run continuously between SAC and L’Auberge (no $ charge, driver gratuity recommended)

8 am – 8:30 am: Artists park at SAC and take Trolley to L’Auberge for set-up and to begin working

11 am: Artists gather together with their work onto the lawn to display for judging/sales – one award given (to be determined; usually a certificate to be used toward classes or an item in the gallery at the Arts Center)

11:30 am: Event is over (go eat lunch at the Cress on Oak Creek, the creekside restaurant at L’Auberge!)
