Opening Reception: May 11, 2018 from 5 to 7pm

“Chinese Characters” is a collection of portraiture all painted from life… I find models in the barber shop, massage girls, hotel managers and housekeepers, my acupuncturist and the children and teachers I volunteer with my artambassador.org program. My book publishers and many government officials  have sat for me. I visit with strangers and engage people to pose for me. When painting now I realize that I have never been more at ease, comfortable and void of anxiety for the first time in my life. I can’t exactly say why. Have I found a mental nirvana, a new reality that allows my true self to emerge without expectations from anyone, not even myself?”

NEW! Sedona Summer Colony Workshop

Joan Fullerton
Contemporary Mixed Media
July 16–19, 2018

Join us for inspiring demonstrations, lectures, encouragement and practice. You’ll learn how to coax hints of reality from an abstract background, how to integrate collage imagery, how to control values and colors for emotional emphasis, and how to suggest rather than delineate. You’ll explore working intuitively, responding to what shows up, working in a series, mixing and utilizing neutrals for softer, more ethereal abstracts.

We’ll touch on notions of confidence, procrastination, vulnerability, curiosity, courage, talent, play, inspiration, intuition, your mean critic, metaphor, symbolic elements, competition, marketing, your belief systems, finding balance, and more! There will be plenty of time for “playing” and creating along with individual attention and guidance.

Loosen Up!
July 27–29, 2018

“Loosening up” is a goal for many, from beginners to experienced painters. Through demonstration, studio painting time, and individual attention, the focus of this workshop is to provide the tools and techniques for students’ to realize their individual creative process in order to take their work to the next level.

We will cover color theory in the simplest terms to understand values, review various approaches to under-painting and glazing techniques, and practice a loose application of paint through the use of various brushes and mixed media.

Everyone works and learns differently and Tim will work with each student to guide them to defining their own style. Because many practicing painters seek ways of “loosening up” we will explore numerous techniques to move beyond our comfort zones. Students will gain knowledge of products and techniques along with new found confidence in their painting practice. All skill levels welcome.

Summer Kids Camp: The Art of Filmmaking
Camp Dates: June 18–29, 2018 / July 9–20, 2018

Summer Art of Filmmaking Camps at the Sedona Arts Center provide a rich artistic environment for youth ages 10 – 14. Students begin by deconstructing scenes from contemporary favorites, examining all the aspects that make a scene work. Students then develop their own unique storyline to bring to the big screen.

Filmmaking is a very collaborative process that involves all the arts. Students will explore writing, story development, acting, camera work, lighting, editing, graphics and presentation. The process creates a great opportunity for students to discover new interests and skill sets. The camp culminates in a screening of the final film but students have the opportunity to create their own individual edit during camp from the footage they have developed together.

Hands in Clay Summer Art Camp
June 18–22, 2018 10:00 am – Noon

Our hands are our most important tools! Hand-building is both fun and presents endless possibilities. 30,000 years ago, before the potters wheel, people were making small travel-sized figurines of human and animal forms. Pinch pots were developed for cooking and coil forms that led to larger vessels. Together you will discover and explore ‘ancient’ hand-building methods that are still fun today. Class is limited to 8 students. No experience necessary.
