Emphasizing Abstraction
April 5 – 7, 2019
Working in the studio from reproductions including older and 20th century masters, we’ll move through a guided series of exercises to understand that abstraction – composition with color and shape – is THE foundation, the great engine behind all painting. Significant emphasis for the first two days of the workshop will be placed on drawing interpretively from the images, as the most abstract graphic language, with part of each day spent engaged in a series of exercises using crayons and graphite to complement our examination of form with paints. The third day we will continue that investigation working with a live model in the studio applying all that we learned.

As Maurice Denis said at the beginning of the 20th century:

‘Remember: a picture before being a battle-horse, a nude woman or some anecdote is essentially a flat surface covered with colors arranged in a certain order.’

Painting the Story in the Still-Life
April 5 – 7, 2019
Every painting, even the humble still life, has a story in it. It’s told by what subject we choose to paint, how we present that subject, and how we paint it. Finding what interests us in a subject and how we connect to it drives that story, and directs how the painting is made.

We’ll work on small still life paintings to explore the process – from thumbnail sketches, lighting the subject, considerations of composition, to the application of paint to build form with light, color and mark. We will walk the line between technique and intuition, using the still life as a way to explore paint and why we make art.

Big and Little: An Intuitive Collage Workshop
April 19 – 21, 2019
“The intuitive artist is the artist who trusts what her eye tells her is good. She allows for the fact that she has a story to tell through art, but lets go of the notion that the story will be known before she starts working. It is not so much about learning a technique, as it is learning to trust that you know what you know. It is letting go of a plan, letting go of expectations, and creating in spite of your fear. If you have been formally trained in art it may mean learning to trust your eye rather than the rules. If you have never so much as taken an art workshop it may mean giving yourself permission to play with the tools and materials you once thought were only for professionals. Either way, to work intuitively allows for the finished work to be more than what the artist is capable of producing on his artistic merits alone. It allows for the voice within to translate to the canvas without the need to have to spell out the message and make it obvious to the viewer.”

The Magic of Paperclay
April 23 – 24, 2019
Michele Collier has developed an intuitive sculptural path with an incredibly versatile medium. In this workshop you will learn to explore the expressive beauty of the human form through a unique process working from slab to sculptural form. For sculptors with experience this is a game changer, for those with no experience it is a wonderful place to begin. No knowledge of anatomy, sculpture or ceramics is needed to fully engage with this workshop. In slab form, the clay can be twisted, folded, squeezed and torn to mimic the human form. Paperclay will easily adhere to itself – no scoring or slipping needed. We will break some rules and also learn some new ones as you delve into this modern, user-friendly medium.

Abstraction and the Landscape – Without the Landscape

This three-day workshop is a guided exploration of abstraction and the abstraction in the landscape through collage. We will paint our own paper, both solids and patterns. We will cut and place these color shapes on the page the same way that we look for a motif by moving through the landscape. It is the abstraction, the shapes, that we must adjust if we are working purely abstractly or if we are working from life.

On day one, with our painted papers, we will make quick abstract collages, several to a page. With the use of a scanner/printer we will rework directly on prints of our collages, each time in a new direction. This saves us from always starting with a blank sheet and enables us to reach further.
