“All my life I have been fascinated by the ever-changing dynamics of our American West. Through my work I strive to portray the many cultures that have come before us with dignity, respect and understanding. From the ancient cliff dwellers, to the cowboys that rode the range, my subjects reflect the West I’ve researched and lived. I’ve always felt if you do what you know and love your statement will be pure and unhampered the feeling will shine through.” —Susan Kliewer

Susan Kliewer is one of the Southwest’s most acclaimed contemporary sculptors.  In 1993 Susan won a competition to create a monument of Sedona Schnebly. A ten-foot high sculpture of her town’s namesake was installed in front of the Sedona City Library. Kliewer’s life-size fountain portraying the Sinagua people and a fountain of a Hopi Water Maiden are also to be found in Sedona. Other sculptures by Susan Kliewer are located across the US. Susan’s most recent accolade is for the prestigious “Best of Show” award at the 2018 Cowgirl Up! exhibition at the Desert Caballeros Western Museum for her bronze sculpture “Teton Warrior.”Among the numerous prizes and awards she has won, Susan is especially proud of the Governor’s Award at the Cowgirl Up! Sedona’s Deep Connection to Modern Art
Free Talk with Mark Rownd
April 5, 2019 / 4 – 5 pm
Join Mark Rownd for a look into Sedona’s rich artistic history. As a collector of Max Ernst and other surrealists that visited Sedona in the early days of modern art, Mark has done extensive research into the time period, even discovering a new Max Ernst artwork in the area. Sedona holds a significant but little known place in the history of the modern art movement in America during the 20th century. During the 1940’s and 50’s key figures who influenced the formation of the modern art movement in New York traveled to Sedona to live and create art here.  Much of the art created in Sedona during that time period now resides in museums around the U.S and the world, and is still actively being showcased in important historical exhibitions to this day, including an exhibit currently on view at the Tate museum in London, and an exhibition last year at the Museum of Modern Art in NY. Select works from Mark’s collection will be on view.
Talk and Presentation with Stuart Shils
April 4, 2019 / 7 – 8:30 pm
This talk and digital presentation is free and open to the public. Stuart Shils will present some of his own work as a plein air painter, photographer and mixed media artist but the talk is also the first session of the Stuart Shils course “Emphasizing Abstraction”. Stuart reminds us that abstraction – composition with color and shape – is THE foundation, the great engine behind all painting and two-dimensional artwork. As Maurice Denis said at the beginning of the 20th century:

‘Remember: a picture before being a battle-horse, a nude woman or some anecdote is essentially a flat surface covered with colors arranged in a certain order.’

Emphasizing Abstraction

April 5 – 7, 2019

Working in the studio from reproductions including older and 20th century masters, we’ll move through a guided series of exercises to understand that abstraction – composition with color and shape – is THE foundation, the great engine behind all painting. Significant emphasis will also be placed on drawing interpretively from the images in the most abstract graphic language, with part of each day spent engaged in a series of exercises using crayons and graphite to complement our examination of form with paints.

Embrace the Struggle!
Free Presentation with Chris Navarro

April 13, 2019 / 3 – 4:30 pm
“Embrace the Struggle” is an inspirational presentation by Chris Navarro, one of Arizona’s finest and most prolific sculptors currently being honored with an exhibition at the Phippen Museum in Prescott through April 21st. His talk and digital presentation will bring to light how personal struggle and artistic struggle are part of the process of creativity. Known for his rodeo and cowboy monumental sculptures he makes the connection between his days as a bull rider to his artistic work. Regardless of how many struggles and physical injuries he has suffered, he remains undaunted, and constantly seeks new challenges, especially in the art world. Navarro was also selected as the Honored Artist for the 2015 Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming.

Painting From the Rim of the Grand Canyon
Bill Cramer

May 3 – 5, 2019
Nothing really compares to painting at the edge of the Grand Canyon. This three-day intensive offers: master instruction, the support of the Grand Canyon Conservancy Field Institute (GCCFI) and coordination through the Sedona Arts Center. We will car pool or use GCCFI van to get to various locations on the south rim over the course of the workshop, coordinating our locations to create optimal lighting for the painting experience.

Bill Cramer teaches various approaches to working on-site and how to efficiently compose and complete plein air paintings. Emphasis will be placed on how to effectively translate the often complex three dimensional landscape onto a two dimensional plane using thumbnail sketches, limited palettes and the thoughtful use of colors, values, shapes, edges and textures. Further emphasis will be placed on the creative process to make paintings that are more than strict representations of the landscape we see. Multiple demonstrations will be complemented by individual attention and group learning.
