Painting Tlaquepaque with Gretchen Lopez
May 3 – 5, 2019

By concentrating on loose oil sketches this plein air course will teach the student how light effects the shapes and various textures we see. Discover a more impressionistic way of capturing Sedona’s most interesting architectural sights, while taking in the breathtaking atmosphere and culture of the area.
100 Collages with Ken Kewley
May 17 – 19, 2019
This is a guided exploration of abstraction and the abstraction in the landscape through collage. We will paint our own paper, both solids and patterns. We will cut and place these color shapes on the page the same way that we look for a motif by moving through the landscape. It is the abstraction, the shapes, that we must adjust if we are working purely abstractly or if we are working from life. These invented landscapes will be reworked, each time transforming them, far beyond where we might have stopped, all on a path away from copying and rendering towards a more exciting and ultimately more real picture of what we find beautiful in the world around us, no matter, if we go outdoors, or stay in, collage or paint.
Mixed Media Figurative Abstraction with Robert Burridge
June 26 – 28, 2019
This workshop pushes you out of your safe zone and into a brand new, looser, abstract direction drawing, painting and collaging the contemporary nude. Learn how to paint the freestyle abstract figure! Color is explained and explored and we will learn the 12 Design Compositions for a successful painting. Your “drawing the nude” skills are not a prerequisite. Classes will include a variety of poses with the nude, draped and partially draped model, lots of paint sketching, gestural drawing and finger painting techniques on one of the three days. Be prepared to paint looser, bolder, freer, lighter and more intuitively. Plenty of time for action-filled painting exercises, demos and personalized attention. All water soluble paints are welcomed. Materials list provided.
The Joy of Observation with Lyn Boyer
Oct 9 – 11, 2019
Through plein air painting in Sedona you will learn to follow a roadmap that will continue to guide your creative journey long after the workshop is over. Bringing more clarity to your work as you learn to paint with intent. This workshop will also teach how to develop the mindset of ‘practice’ that leads to successful ‘performance’. Lyn will start with a demo start to finish, explaining her thought process for each step, aiding you in developing a personal methodology. The workshop will focus on a variety of subjects – drawing, design, value, color, harmonizing your painting, materials and brush and paint handling. We will discuss how to approach your creative process – concept, scene selection and preparation. You will learn the steps that prepare the groundwork for a successful painting.

Two Workshops with Koo Schadler
Metalpoint Drawing – November 7 – 9, 2019
The Egg Tempera Portrait – November 11 – 15, 2019

The traditional technique of metalpoint (also known as silverpoint; i.e. drawing with a piece of silver) is increasingly popular. This workshop offers students the opportunity to draw with a variety of metal tips including silver, brass, and copper. Koo Schadler will demonstrate and explain all aspects of the medium: types of surfaces to work on, adding highlights and color to a drawing, and how to speed up the oxidation process. Students will make for themselves several different drawing surfaces starting from scratch. Each students goes home with Koo’s metalpoint instruction booklet and a complete metalpoint kit to continue working in the medium. Open to all levels, from beginning to experienced draftsmen.
Plein Air in the Studio with Kathryn Stats
Oct 9 – 11, 2019
Kathryn Stats is known for her vibrant color, dramatic compositions and subtle brushwork. In this studio workshop students will have the opportunity to choose whether they wish to work on landscape composition from photo-reference or with a still-life/floral situation or both! Students will benefit from demonstrations, slide show and lecture, and one-on-one assistance with their paintings. Kathryn has  been a keynote presenter at the Sedona Plein Air Festival and at the National Plein Air Convention. Now take this opportunity to work with Kathryn in the more controlled studio environment where artistic creativity and inspiration come together on larger scale or more developed work than plein air painting allows.
