Zen Creativity and the Art of Life

This is the workshop Alok gives on his 80th birthday! He welcomes you to rest in the spaciousness of your being, to be comfortable and intimate with not knowing, and to allow your brush to dance from emptiness. It will become obvious to you this is a healing journey as well as a creativity workshop! You will come to hold your brushes as friends and move with them in harmony. Being playful with not-knowing, we become available to the intelligence, creativity, and good humor outside the boundaries of what we know.

Wax, Paper, Scissors
Crystal Neubauer

Delve into the art of paper and glue, working through an intensive exploration of the art of abstract collage, intended to help you connect to the design knowledge you already carry within you to create satisfying works of art while discovering your own authentic style.

Create compositions utilizing both, elements with organic torn edges, and those deliberately cut with scissors. Learn to select the proper adhesive, determine what substrate to utilize, and alter a variety of salvaged materials for use in collage. You will also learn the unique nature and differences found between hot encaustic wax and cold wax mediums when applied to the paper elements and incorporated into the design.

October 11 – 12, 2018
Light & Drama with Watercolor
Catherine Hillis

This two-day workshop will begin with a discussion of plein air supplies and ideas for simplifying equipment in the field. Students will then learn how to begin the thought process for designing an exciting composition from the scene before them and how to simplify that landscape in preparation for painting. Observation is essential to the painter and Hillis will teach students simple steps to aid them in observing truth in the landscape. How to convey atmosphere and depth will be addressed.

November 8 -10, 2018
Abstracting the Landscape
Claudia Hartley

Learn to exaggerate and personalize color to create your own version of the unique modern landscape. Using photos of scenes, students will learn how to plan a good composition and how to mix beautiful clean colors. Students will learn how to take advantage of the quick drying properties of acrylics and how to create vibrancy through color combinations.

Novemer 30 – December 2, 2018
Paper Painting Animals and Pets
Elizabeth St. Hilaire

During this comprehensive 3-day workshop you will learn a unique figurative mixed media collage technique. Emphasis will be on defining form using light and shadow, and treating every torn tidbit of paper as a brush stroke. Students will create impressionistic collages that look like paintings. Create your hand-painted paper palette through Gelli Plate printing, staining, stamping and patterning that will be torn up and glued down over an acrylic underpainting.

October 25 – 28
Source to Studio Workshop
Joshua Been

In this workshop, through clearly explaining concepts in the translation process from a three dimensional environment to a two dimensional surface, I will clear up the mystery, and strengthen your knowledge of the process and visual language of painting, from the source (plein air) to the studio. I teach a 4 pronged visual language approach (Value, Shapes, Edges, and Texture) that is both easy to remember and an effective way of breaking down difficult subject matter into manageable information.

This workshop meets for 3.5 days. The final day is a complete demonstration of taking a plein air painting done from life and building a larger and more detailed composition in the studio setting.
