Painting the Southern Desert
Nov 10 – 12, 2018

This new Field Expedition creates an unforgettable experience of the history of Arizona and the beauty of the Southern desert, as we paint in and around the first European settlement in the region. Tubac is a wonderful go-to destination where we will study capturing the light and learning to paint the essence of what you see from life. These loose, impressionistic oil sketches can be seen as stand-alone artworks or studies for studio work later on. Most sites are within walking distance from the Tubac Country Inn! But we will also sojourn to the Historic missions of Tumacacori and the fabulous “Dove of the Desert” at the Golden Hour, San Xavier Del Bac all within a 15 minute drive! Oils, Water-mixable Oils, Acrylic and Watercolor are all welcome with the plein-air equipment of your choice.

New Field Expedition! Lori Putnam
Plein Air Painting in Varanasi, India
Feb 1 – 8, 2019

A visit to Varanasi is a full spectrum adventure to a world as old as human culture. A sacred pilgrimage location on the Ganges, the riverfront of Varanasi is an amalgam of Muslim, Hindu, Jain and Buddhist architecture accumulated over 3000 years. A vast stair-cased walk along the river spans many miles of shore. Known as the Ghats, the riverfront is rich with color, texture, and life as only India can display it. Time is a palpable reality here and it is all present at once as the rural, urban and sacred all overlap in a dazzling display.

This workshop will include lectures and demonstrations; individual painting time; personalized instruction; and group discussions aimed to promote your progress. While demonstrations and advice on technique will be geared toward oil painters, artists who are more comfortable working in other mediums are welcome. Plein air experience strongly recommended.

Emphasis will be placed on how to effectively translate the often complex three dimensional landscape onto a two dimensional plane using thumbnail sketches, limited palettes and the thoughtful use of colors, values, shapes, edges and textures. Further emphasis will be placed on the creative process to make paintings that are more than strict representations of the landscape we see. Multiple demonstrations will be complemented by individual attention and group learning.

Four workshops are designed as stand-alone colony experiences or can be used as a creative kick-start for an individual residency immediately following the workshop. The workshop/residency program takes place the week before the independent residencies, July 16 – 19, 2018 with arrival on campus July 15 and departure (or individual residency starting) on July 20.
