Zen Creativity: The Art of Life and Death
with Alok Hsu Kwang-han
October 7 – 9, 2022
In this workshop we engage in Zen creativity to explore the art of life and death. Using specially made Chinese brushes, ink, and paper – all provided for you to use and keep after the workshop – Alok will ask you to paint things that are impossible to paint so that you can be comfortable with not-knowing and be available to the intelligence and creativity prior to thought. In that deep intimacy, you-as-the-brush can move forth with freedom and wonder. We let go of our customary identification with who we are and who we are supposed to be and our need to know how to do it, so that we can show up for the gift of healing into death and into life which may not be so different from showing up for the creativity prior to knowing who we are and what to do.

Let’s Play and Explore Together!
with 2022 Festival Judge: Daryl Urig
October 11 – 13, 2022
Mediums: Oils, Alkyds, Acylics – Instruction will be in Oils with brushes and painting knives. Daryl will have painting knives with him for sale if students would like to purchase from him.

Playing with paint can help us appreciate what we develop on canvas and enjoy the new processes we have learned. Focusing on the big picture, we can create beautiful form on any subject that we fancy. Any tools may be used. Design, color, simple shapes, and unique representation of any form is key.

As a painter I have explored many different avenues in my career. I am not looking for one technique to accomplish over, and over again. Isn’t that the definition of insanity? I like to break new ground as often as I can.

The workshop will cover my basic learnings over a lifetime of experimenting with paint. Highlighting design, color mixing, paint application, creative mark making, and what can we do with lighting while understanding the basics of overall image capturing to showcase personality on canvas.

Abstract Figurative ONLINE Workshop
with Robert Burridge
October 14 – 16, 2022
This workshop pushes you out of your safe zone and into a brand new, looser, abstract direction drawing, painting and collaging the contemporary nude. You will learn expressive painting techniques for the modern painter. If you ever wanted to learn how to paint the freestyle abstract figure, this workshop is for you. Color is explained and explored. You will learn the 12 Design Compositions for a successful painting. Your “drawing the nude” skills are not a prerequisite.

The second day of the workshop will include working directly with the live model in a variety of poses including the nude, draped and partially draped scenarios, lots of paint sketching, gestural drawing and finger painting techniques. Be prepared to paint looser, bolder, freer, lighter and more intuitively. Plenty of time for action-filled painting exercises, demos and personalized attention. All water soluble paints are welcomed. Materials list provided on this page – click the Materials List tab above. PDF handouts will be provided.

Capturing Light & Atmosphere
in Watercolor

with 2022 Festival Judge: Susan Lynn
October 25 – 27, 2022
Join Susan painting outdoors, learning to use the unique qualities of watercolor to capture the beautiful Sedona landscape. Susan will give a demo at the start of each class session, discussing how to make purposeful choices with values and color to enhance the sense of depth, atmosphere, and light in your paintings. Along the way, we will tackle the nuts and bolts of plein air painting with watercolor, exploring a variety of watercolor techniques and Susan’s “split primary” limited palette approach to color mixing. After each morning demo, students will paint while Susan circulates around to give individual attention and instruction as you work. We will gather at the end of each day to share our paintings with one another and answering any questions that arise from the day’s outing.

Susan will be conducting a Watercolor Demonstration at the Sedona Arts Center on Friday, October 28, the day after the workshop ends.  Students enrolled in this workshop may attend for free.  There is a $50/person charge to the public.
