Registration open for 2019 spring Master Recycler course

FLAGSTAFF — Registration is open for the spring 2019 Master Recycler course with the city of Flagstaff. Participants will receive in-depth training by industry experts in the fields of sustainable building, composting, reuse and repair, recycling and more. The course also features guided tours of local facilities and businesses, such as the recycling center, landfill and NAU’s composting operation.

The city of Flagstaff has a goal of diverting 90 percent of its current waste by 2050. While this is an ambitious goal, reaching it is possible with the help of Master Recycler volunteers. These engaged community members work throughout the city, spreading the word about all things waste and recycling at events such as Earth Day, Fix-it Clinics and the Farmer’s Market. Since the program began in 2017, this group of 60 volunteers has reached over 14,000 of their Flagstaff peers.

Upon completing the course, volunteers will share their newly acquired knowledge by engaging with the public at community events, presenting to groups in Flagstaff, and implementing projects that increase waste diversion at their work, school, place of worship or elsewhere. The city’s Sustainability Section actively supports the Master Recyclers by providing outreach materials, organizing events and acting as a platform to launch their own waste diversion campaigns.

The 2019 Master Recycler Course is offered this spring, over eight Thursdays, from February 7 to April 4, 2019. Classes will meet from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the main Flagstaff Library. To register or find out more please visit www.flgmasterrecycler.com or call 928-213-2151. Class size is limited to 30 people, so early application is encouraged.
