FLAGSTAFF — Children, and their parents, began the day decorating sugar skulls with activities progressing to musical and dance performances and educational programs during the second day of the 2016 Celebraciones de la Gente.
The sugar skull workshop was presented by members of Flagstaff Nuestras Raíces, which is a partner in the 13th annual celebration at the museum.
Activities included a dance performance by Ballet Folklorico de Colores — Flagstaff, a musical performance by Mariachi Sol Azteca from Tucson, a performance of Mexican folk music by local favorites Los Compadres, and educational programs by Martin Espino; the “History and Significance of Ofrendas / Altars” by Flagstaff Nuestras Raíces; “Growing Up Chicana in Morenci, Arizona” by Elena Díaz Björkquist; “La Virgen & Talking Eagle” by Award-winning author, and storyteller Stella Pope Duarte and Los Recuerdos del Barrio II” by Delia Ceballos Muñoz.
The public also had an opportunity to purchase jewelry, folk art, pottery and other items from more than a dozen artists, several from New Mexico, as well as a variety of Mexican food from Archuleta Catering.
