Recycling Update – Flagstaff City Council approves contract with Friedman Recycling

FLAGSTAFF — During the June 20 Council meeting, the Flagstaff City Council approved an agreement with Friedman Recycling Company for the equipment, transportation, processing, and recovery of recyclable materials. This Agreement supports new and enhanced operational and financial efficiencies in the hauling, processing, and recovery of the City’s recyclables and ensures that materials are recycled to their fullest extent possible.

Under the agreement, Friedman will provide compactors and containers that will be loaded by City staff at the City’s Recycling Transfer Facility located at 1800 E Butler Ave for subsequent transportation by Friedman to the Phoenix area. The compactors will maximize hauling weights and therefore limit the number of shipments and associated carbon footprint of the City’s recyclables. Friedman will haul the compacted recyclables from Flagstaff to their materials recovery facility in Phoenix and will process the recycling materials for recovery and transport to recycling mills for manufacture into new products.

The term of the agreement is 6-months with two 3-month extensions possible. The City will be developing a formal solicitation over the next few months to seek a longer-term arrangement to maintain and enhance the City’s recycling transportation and processing needs.

There is no change to the types of recycling materials that the City currently accepts. Residents and businesses should recycle only acceptable materials and those materials should be empty, clean, dry and loose (not contained in plastic bags).
