FLAGSTAFF — “Read On Flagstaff,” a literacy project within the larger Read On Arizona network of organizations and agencies, is seeking families in the Sunnyside neighborhood of Flagstaff to participate in the program.
A Collaborative Literacy Project facilitated by the United Way of Northern Arizona, Read On Flagstaff reaches into communities to provide personalized services to families with children ages 0-8 in those neighborhoods of Flagstaff, organizers reported in a media release.
“These neighborhoods have Flagstaff’s most racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse families, and the highest number of children challenged to read proficiently by the end of 3rd grade,” organizers reported.
“We provide personalized assistance to parents with increasing children’s literacy skills for a period of six weeks,” said coach Maria Jensen. “Participants must live in the Sunnyside neighborhood and have a child or children from 0 – 8 years old. We will make at least one home visit, otherwise parents may choose to meet at locations besides their home. We talk and demonstrate how to do fun reading and writing activities at home and provide information about community resources. No fee is asked of the parent.”
Parents who want to participate should call (928) 773-9813 and leave a message for the literacy coaches, Maria Jensen or Nancy Barnes.
