My name is Katie Mommaerts and I am a licensed clinical social worker and fourth year Interdisciplinary Health doctoral candidate at Northern Arizona University completing my dissertation. I am conducting research to determine the relationship between self-reported symptoms of anxiety and self-esteem from the perspectives of female Mexican-American adolescents (ages 14-17) and mental health therapists.
I am inquire about your interest in participating in this study and/or referring someone who may be interested. I attached the flyers (one for adolescent participants and one for mental health therapist participants) that can be distributed.
Ways a Mental Health Therapist can be involved:
Participating in one focus group via Zoom lasting approximately two hours. The focus group will ask about your clinical background as a mental health therapist (e.g., duration of career and specialty), perception of anxiety and self-esteem (e.g., definition and symptoms), therapeutic interventions utilized in treatment, cultural considerations, and experiences treating anxiety symptoms in female Mexican-American adolescents. Free 2.0 CEUs will be offered.
Ways an Adolescent can be involved:
1:1 Interview
- Adolescent participants: will complete a demographic survey and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD-7) screener taking 1-2 minutes to complete. Eligible participants will then be asked to complete a 1:1 interview answering questions pertaining to the relationship between self-reported symptoms of anxiety and self-esteem from their perspective. The interview will occur with the researcher and will last approximately 60 minutes.
- Please note that all interviews will occur via Zoom.
Here is the eligibility criteria:
- Adolescent participants: (a) identifies as female Mexican-American, (b) between the ages of 14-17, (c) self-reports symptoms of anxiety (as determined by the GAD-7 screener), (d) able to understand and communicate in English, (e) has access to technology (e.g., computer or smartphone), and (f) lives in Arizona.
- Mental health therapist participants: (a) hold at least a Master’s degree in their respective field, (b) able to provide mental health services to adolescents, and (c) are in good standing in accordance with their respective Arizona professional licensing board.
Your participation in this study is completely voluntary and you can withdraw at any time. To the best of our ability your answers in this study will remain confidential. You will not be identified in any report or publication of this study. If you choose not to participate it will not affect your relationship with Northern Arizona University or result in any other penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled.
