FLAGSTAFF — Hundreds of NAU students and their families filled the Ardrey Memorial Auditorium during the 2019 Hispanic/Latinx Convocation on May 9
The 2019 Hispanic/Latinx Convocation is a celebration to honor NAU’s Hispanic, Latinx, and Chicanx graduating students and acknowledge their accomplishment.
A reception followed the ceremony at the University Union.
The celebration included opening remarks by Laura Sujo-Montes from the College of Education and Dr. T. Mark Montoya of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences; the Presidential Address by Dr. Rita Hurting Cheng; a blessing by NAU professor and Mayan Elder Marina Vasquez of the NAU Native American Cultural Center; a performance Ballet Folklorico de Colores with NAU Mariachi Mar y Sol, with the keynote address by Dani Donaldson, M.Ed., assistant director of First-Generation Programs at NAU.
The event also included the presentation of the:
- Cesar Chavez Award: Recognizes students with strong leadership skills, a demonstrated care and concern for fellow students, and a history of involvement on behalf of the Hispanic community.
- Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz Award: Recognizes students with demonstrated leadership abilities, strong attachments to their cultural heritage, and demonstrated advocacy regarding women’s rights.
- Gabriela Mistral Award: Recognized students with a strong commitment to education and to promoting multicultural understanding.
- Outstanding Hispanic Graduate Student: Recognizes a graduate student that serves as a positive role model for their fellow undergraduate colleagues; with strong leadership skills, demonstrates care and concern for fellow students, and a history of involvement on behalf of the Hispanic community.
