Museum of Northern Arizona — June at the Museum

Message from Mary –
As I pass the one year mark as Director here at MNA, I look back on a memorable and sometimes challenging year. From the Museum Fire last year to a Pandemic in 2020, our staff, volunteers and members have demonstrated resilience, imagination, flexibility and their passion for MNA. After many weeks working from home, some of the museum staff are now gradually and gratefully returning to their offices, after undergoing training to further enhance their safety while at work. From increased cleaning and socially distanced meetings to wearing masks when together, we are adjusting to new ways of working safely. We will be equally cautious reopening to the public. We are currently planning so that you can come and experience the museum in a safe and enjoyable way. To see some of the changes we are putting in place, I invite you to join the virtual tour of the museum on June 18, as we continue to bring the museum to you, until you can come to us. I look forward to that day. It is the people of MNA, all of you included, who make this museum the remarkable place it is. Thank you for being a part of MNA, and for helping to make my first year here such an enjoyable and rewarding time.

Summer Discovery Camps pending
Decision June 15 for camps July 6-July 31
Our camp staff have been busily making plans for how to safely hold summer camps, following CDC guidance. While we will not make a final decision until June 15 on whether the July camp sessions can take place, we feel confident in our plans for temperature checks, keeping kids in isolated small groups, and moving activities outdoors, as well as other enhanced safety measures.
Become a Junior Paleontologist
Monday-Friday
Join the Jr. Paleontologist group on MNA Facebook to keep up with the paleontology activities for kids provided by Dinosaur Dave (aka Dr. Dave Gillette). The activities can also be downloaded from musnaz.org. Kids who participate will become Junior Paleontologists and be invited to a Paleontology Pizza Party.
Liberating Landscape
Through summer
While the museum is closed, we have creative ways for you to enjoy some of the paintings, pottery, photographs and etchings featured in this exhibition of works by six women artists from 1900 to 1940. Look at the art while listening to poems or read the chapbook. Take a yoga class recorded in the gallery. Be inspired to create with a landscape sketching lesson or a coloring page.
Extended through August 2
Patience padawan, there will be time to visit this exhibition featuring work by more than 20 contemporary Native artists who were influenced by Star Wars later this summer. Meanwhile, watch videos including interviews with artists, a tour of the exhibit, and the making of HOPI-R2. Design your own droid, color art from the exhibit, or try the other activities to become a Jr. Jedi.

Build a flock
Soft, cuddly, and quiet, these sheep created by Navajo artist Ray Growler make perfect pets. Growler uses dried aspen wood and cured animal skins to create these charming sculptures. The museum shops now offer curbside pick up as well as shipping, so you can browse and buy online, then schedule a time to pickup your purchase. Every purchase helps the artists and the museum.
Bring home the whole exhibition
Hot off the press, this new publication presents essays and showcases full color photographs of art from the The Force Is With Our People exhibition. This companion publication explores the influence Star Wars has had on contemporary Native artists and why this enduring piece of popular culture seems to resonate so strongly with Native communities, specifically those in the American Southwest.
