Message from Mary –
Summer arrived in a cloud of smoke last Monday, though luckily for us at the museum, we are far from the path of the Rafael Fire and the shifting wind clears the air around us. We are grateful that these increasingly frequent summer fires are not endangering the museum and that we can continue to welcome visitors Tuesday through Sundays with a safe and inspiring indoor visit. I know many of you are eager to get out and about after staying at home for so long and we are pleased to welcome you to MNA.
Our thoughts are with those fighting the flames, as well as the many Flagstaff residents, including members of the museum family, who are ready to leave their homes should the fire continue in their direction.
We are hopeful that the fire crews and the monsoons will work together to put out these fires by the time our Heritage Festival begins this first weekend of July. And we are relishing the joyful noise of children at our Discovery Camps, where one of their recent lessons was on the role of fire in a healthy forest.

This combined festival celebrates all Native people of the Colorado Plateau, with performances from the Lalo Dance Group (Hopi), JJ Otereo (Navajo & Hopi), People of the Tall Pines (Hualapai), and the Yavapai Apache Warriorettes. Lalo Dance Group

This community-based dance group shares the long history of dance in Hopi culture and the spiritual importance it holds within the villages. Group leader Valjean Lalo will also discuss the history and significance of their songs and dance.These performances are part of the Heritage Festival. Buy tickets

Cultural Connections: Zuni Weaving
July 8, 2 pm livestreamed on Facebook
Aric Chapito will explore the Zuni collections, talking about some of his weavings that are in the collections as well as some of the older weavings and objects. This presentation will be livestreamed as part of the Heritage Festival.

JJ Otero
July 10 and 11, 12 pm and 2 pm
JJ Otero has been called the ” the poet laureate of the Native rock scene.” He sings from the heart about life experiences familiar to other Rez residents and has won many awards for his music, a blend of rock, soul, and blues he calls “Native-Soul-Rock”. Gourd workshop
July 16, 2 pm
Hopi artisan Jonah Hill will demonstrate the process of harvesting and creating gourd tools using gourds grown in MNA’s gardens. In this presentation, Jonah will examine the origins of this unique art form and discuss its importance as a Hopi art form. This workshop is part of the Heritage Festival. Hopi Long Flute

Join Stewart Koyiyumptewa Program Manager of the Hopi Cultural Preservation office and flutist Gary Stroutsos as they explore the mysteries of the replicated Hopi Long Flute and talk about their collaborative efforts to reinvigorate the long flute tradition. People of the Tall Pines

The Hualapi men sing traditional bird songs while the women dance. These dances mimic the movement of birds and represent the journeys of the Tribe, shared by the elder women and handed down to younger generations.These performances are part of the Heritage Festival. Buy tickets

Cultural Connections: Havasupai Holdings

Ophelia Watahomigie-Corliss will offer a virtual tour of the MNA’s Havasupai collections. As a Cultural Consultant for MNA, Watahomagie-Corliss will provide unique insight into the significance of each piece.This virtual tour is part of the Heritage Festival and will be livestreamed on Facebook.

Yavapai-Apache Warriorettes
July 24, 12 pm and 2 pm
Enjoy a special performance by the Yavapai-Apache Warriorettes. The Yavapai used to occupy an area of approximately 20,000 mi² from the San Francisco Peaks to the north, to the Pinaleno Mountains and Mazatzal Mountains to the southeast, and the Colorado River to the west, and almost to the Gila River and the Salt River to the south. These performances are part of the Heritage Festival.

Michael Moore Native Medicinal Garden, Sun. 11 am – 2 pm
During the festival weekends, volunteers will be in the MNA gardens to answer questions and provide information. Learn about local pollinators and get seeds to plant at home. See the new Pueblo bread oven and learn how Native Americans for Community Action uses the garden to teach about healthy living.

Learn to draw and paint with local bird artist and biologist, Liz Blaker. In the four week bird painting series you will learn the biology of birds as well as how to sketch birds in the field and how to control, mix, and apply watercolors. Family Fridays: Festival Fun

MNA educator Mari Soliday tours the opening day of the Heritage Festival, highlighting youth artists and family friendly aspects of this month-long event. These tracks were discovered in November 2020 at a construction site just a couple miles down the road from the museum. The prints are preserved in red sandstone from the Moenkopi Formation, which is estimated to be early to middle Triassic in age (252 to 235 million years). Paleontologist Dr. Dave Gillette will be studying the tracks to determine what left them. Now that they are on view in the Jaime Major Golightly Courtyard, you can come study them too.

This exhibition features paintings, photographs, and pottery by six women artists from 1900 to 1940. We’ve shared these art pieces on the MNA Facebook page and now you can watch an online tour with Alan Petersen, but seeing the art in person is so much better. With our advance ticketing system, you can reserve your time to visit the museum and experience this art as it was meant to be seen.

Created more than a decade ago by Hopi artists Michael Kabotie and Delbridge Honanie, these large-scale paintings tell a story of the human journey through cycles of chaos and discord to places of wholeness and balance.
