Mural Mice Seek Community Feedback for Bushmaster Mural Project

FLAGSTAFF — The City of Flagstaff and Mural Mice Universal would like to invite the community to participate in placing a new mural at Bushmaster Park this summer.

The Mural Mice, a Flagstaff artist collective will be hosting a community meeting and potluck June 9 at 6pm in the Bushmaster Park Sandbox Ramada (3150 N. Alta Vista Dr.) to discuss and brainstorm ideas for the wall. This mural, which will be painted on the public restroom located at the eastern end of the park, is funded by the City of Flagstaff’s Beautification and Public Art Commission (BPAC) with Bed, Board and Beverage (BBB) tax dollars.

Beginning the first week of June, the Mural Mice will be at Bushmaster Park in the afternoons, talking to park users about possibilities for the wall. The first phase of the process is to develop the theme and content for the mural. The ideas gathered from patrons at the park will be brought to the community meeting, where the Mural Mice will facilitate a discussion about the imagery that will go on the wall. Designs will be drawn up based on this discussion and presented to the community at the BPAC June 23 meeting. Once the designs have been approved by BPAC, the painting begins. All ages and artistic abilities are welcome to paint alongside the Mural Mice beginning July 15.

“We try to draw everyone into the picture,” says project director R.E. Wall.  “Murals are an incredible means to bring people together.” The Mural Mice began painting community murals in 2005 and have projects throughout Arizona. Moving to Flagstaff in 2013, they have placed several large public murals including “Mother Myth,” on Phoenix Ave (Historic Rt.66), and the Orpheum’s, “Sound of Flight” in collaboration with Flagstaff artist, Sky Black. This is their first outdoor community mural in Flagstaff and they are excited to make it their most exciting project yet.
