San Francisco Symphony Monday Nights

Two World Premiers, both of Bartok’s masterworks for orchestra, a healthy dose of Stravinsky and solo appearances by world-class performers.

On this first broadcast, Michael Tillson Thomas leads the orchestra in “The Song of the Nightingale,” Igor Stravinsky’s symphonic poem taken from his first opera, along with his suite from “The Firebird.” Yuja Wang is the soloist for the first piano concerto by Dimitri Shostakovich.
In following weeks we’ll welcome pianists Emmanuel Ax and Yefim Bronfman, violinists Gil Shaham and Julia Fischer performing some of the most popular concerti in the repertoire. We’ll even hear a piece for the rarely-featured (but always appreciated) contrabassoon: Tilson-Thomas’ “Urban Legend.”
