KNAU Insider – October 11th, 2019
Classical Music this week
Grand Canyon
Northern Arizona’s year-long celebration of the Grand Canyon Centennial continues Sunday with something very special: A live broadcast of the U.S. Army Field Band from Flagstaff with a program called “Sacred Spaces—A Grand Canyon Celebration.”
The concert, produced in partnership with Grand Canyon Conservancy, Classical Arizona PBS and sister station KBAQ, also features the Soldier’s Chorus of the Field Band with special guests the West Point Glee Club.
One of the pieces on the program is a recent commission by the band of a piece called We Breathless Stand,  by noted film composer Jeff Beal. If you’re familiar with the TV series “Monk,” Netflix’s “House of Cards,” or HBO’s “Rome,” you’ve heard Beal’s work.
A very direct connection with the Grand Canyon is a piece by Tyler Esquivel, an alum of the Native American Composer Apprentice Program at the Grand Canyon Music Festival and now a student at Dine College.
Tickets for the concert are free and at press time were still available at the NAU Central Ticket Office. Our live broadcast will begin at 3 Sunday afternoon on Classical KNAU.
Earlier that same afternoon, Arizona Encore presents a program of vocal music from the Phoenix Chorale and early-music ensemble Helios. Arizona Encore repeats Tuesday evening at 7.
This week’s broadcast concert by the Chicago Symphony presents Riccardo Muti in a program of Debussy and Tchaikovsky.
