An update on state funding for the arts in Arizona

Dear Supporter of Art, Science, and Culture,
As you may know, funding for the arts in Arizona is in jeopardy. Without action, the Arizona Commission on the Arts will lose the majority of its funding this year. We are asking Governor Doug Ducey to allocate funding from the State’s CARES Act funding. The artists of Arizona are changemakers and the Commission has been doing amazing work over the past several years to advance cultural equity and to ensure that the voices of artists of color are supported.
Our executive director sent the this letter to Governor Ducey in response to the defunding of Arizona Commission on the Arts and in support of Arizona Citizens for the Arts’ request to allocate money from the State’s CARES Act funding.
We are also asking our supporters to take action to let Governor Ducey know Arizonans believe funding for the arts in Arizona is vital to our states well being.

Black Lives Matter.

Flagstaff Arts Council shares the outrage that people across the country are feeling at the deaths of George Floyd, Tony McDade, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless others.

Last week, in an effort to amplify the voices of others, we did not post our regular content on our social media channels this week. We encourage the creative community of Flagstaff to reflect and raise up the voices and work of black, indigenous, and other artists and creators of color.

See our statement on social media here.

Opportunities for Artists

Participate in The Orpheum’s Family Film Night

The Orpheum Theater continues to partner with Nackard Pepsi this summer to bring free family content to the flagstaff community. The past four summers we have presented a free family film night with great success and lots of fun. In light of the on going pandemic we are pivoting our program to a virtual adventure on a weekly basis. We hope to collaborate with other local businesses and non-profits that can help bring pre-recorded quality video content to the children and families of our community. We will be able to come to you and handle the video production as well. If you Org already has some pre-recorded video then even better. We will make this as easy on you as we can!

If your organization would like to be part of this program and wants to contribute or wants more information please contact Susan at susan.orpheum@gmail.com.

Pitch Night Arizona
ArtPrize is teaming up with ArtWins Arizona to host Pitch Night Arizona— a one-night virtual event where an artist will leave with a $5,000 grant to create an ambitious outdoor installation at the Grand Valley State University (GVSU) Eberhard Center during the eleventh ArtPrize event  this fall, September 16 – October 4, 2020.  ArtPrize is the world’s largest international art competition.  It is also the most attended public art event in the world, routinely attracting over 500,000 visitors.  $250,000 in cash prizes will be awarded to participating artists, including one $200,000 grand prize.  One of our fantastic local Arizona artists will be featured at this event, creating lasting connections for the artist and perhaps a life-changing grand prize.

Questions about Pitch Night Arizona should be directed to dan@artwins.org or pitchnight@artprize.org.
Entries should be submitted on or before June 18, 2020 to pitchnight@artprize.org.
