FLAGSTAFF — Fresh air. Colorado mountain views. Time away from social media – and lots of time for science.
Teens ages 13 to 16 have the chance for a non-credit, science-based adventure camp offered through Coconino Community College beginning July 16. The PetraCorps Adventure Camp will be co-led by CCC Science Faculty Dr. Aaron Tabor and Andrew Allen. The four days and three nights of the camping-and-hiking adventure features activities and trips that focus on a variety of scientific fields.
“An important aspect of the class is for the students to become more self-aware about their place in the natural world and to understand the major scientific principles that bridge and tie together the disciplines of biology, chemistry, geology and astronomy,” Allen said.
He added that making the connections in an outdoor setting, without the distractions of social technologies, leads to a higher level of understanding and retention of concepts and theories the students will encounter on their educational journeys.
Students will spend their time in Ridgway, Colo., at the Top of the Pines Nature Preserve in the San Juan Mountains. Students will also visit Ouray’s History Museum and the Black Canyon of Gunnison National Park.
During the trip, students will learn the relationship and importance among plants, geology and cultures of the Southwest Colorado Plateau; identify and sketch various plants and organisms; identify various rocks and geologic processes; identify and sketch insects and other bugs; have a basic understanding of how the stars and planets formed; and much more.
Students will use microscopes, telescopes, iPads, Vernier LabQuest computers and Global Positioning System units.
“Each evening ends with a group discussion about the day’s events,” Allen said. “And at the final meeting, students will read poems they have written during the trip.”
All transportation, lodging, group meals and materials will be provided. The class is limited to six people. For cost, to register and for other information, contact Andrew Allen at Andrew.Allen@coconino.edu.
