FLAGSTAFF — Grain or barley. Hops. Yeast. Water.
Like the chords of a great blues tune, the ingredients to make beer are simple and few, but they are infinitely interchangeable for a complexity of experience that borders on heavenly.
Beginning Feb. 16, Coconino Community College Community Education will be hosting the non-credit course, “Northern Arizona Home Brew Academy,” led by Flagstaff-based Brewmeister Adam Harrington, owner of High Altitude Homebrew Supply and Bottle Shop.
“I love teaching what I know,” Harrington said. “It seems daunting, but it’s actually pretty easy.”
The four-session course, offered virtually via Zoom, will be the equivalent of Intro to Homebrewing, Harrington added. He will introduce students in the science, steps and supplies that make the art of brewing possible.
“It’s easy to get started,” Harrington said. “The combinations are almost endless, but it’s easy to make good beer with just a little push in the right direction.”
Meghan Remington, CCC’s Community Learning Coordinator, said, “We’re so excited to share the science and steps of a process that so many people in Flagstaff and northern Arizona enjoy and respect. Flagstaff, in particular, is so well known for its quality and award-winning breweries, and having a former brewer and local business owner as our instructor is such a perfect way to bring the experience full circle.”
Harrington began High Altitude Homebrew in 2017 with a partner after hurting himself while brewing for a bigger outfit in town.
“I had a passion for beer, but couldn’t do it on a large scale,” he said, adding that there was a shortage of outfits in town that supplied homebrewers, so he and his partner filled that gap. He has since acquired sole ownership of the business, and he’s excited to be offering what he knows to people passionate about brewing beer.
Kay Leum, Executive Director of Extended Learning at CCC, said that a goal of CCC Community Education is to bring interesting and relevant course topics that meet the lifelong learning needs and wishes of residents county-wide.
“Our current offerings are all presented virtually, which allows greater access for everyone, even beyond the county,” Leum said. “We want to know ideas for class topics, and we are always looking for instructors.”
