The NAtional Mall, from the Lincolcn Memorial

The National Mall in Washington, District of Columbia, United States, is the place in the nation’s capital that best serves as a platform for the First Amendment of the Constitution of that country: freedom of religion, expression, assembly, and the right to petition. Every year, the National Park Service awards about 3,000 permits for wakes against abortion, demonstrations against war, celebrations of freedom, competitions, marches for  choice, performances, religious speeches and chants, games, and marriage ceremonies. For some, the National Mall is the center of the United States, a place where people sing, protest, take pictures, reconnect with their past, watch other people, exercise, and walk their dogs.

At the time of this writing (January 13, 2019), the United States government has been shut down for 23 days -the longest shutdown in the history of the country- all because of an impasse over Trump’s demand for US$5.6 billion in federal funds to build a US-Mexico border wall.

The National Mall belongs to the American People –not the politicians-, and to the People of the World who share the same ideals of the original American forefathers. Given this political climate, and in an era of diminishing resources for the nation and the planet, one can only hope that the National Mall continues to be a model for freedom, adaptation, and “liberty and justice for all”.
