Friends of Flagstaff’s Future (F3) — Send F3 Your Questions for City Council Candidates!

Send F3 Your Questions for Flagstaff City Council Candidates
by August 2nd

As we do every two years, F3 is preparing our Flagstaff City Council Candidate Questionnaire. F3’s questionnaire will include up to 10 questions designed to provide insight into the values, knowledge, and opinions of the candidates relevant to their potential positions as future city council members.

Questions will be crafted by F3 that address local issues and concerns that relate to F3’s eight Focus Areas. We want to include issues and concerns of importance to you, our members, and other interested residents of the Flagstaff area, as they relate to the city’s policies and decisions. The candidates’ written answers will be posted on F3’s websitein early September, providing an important source of information to Flagstaff voters prior to the November election.

We want and need to hear from you by August 2: What questions do you have for the candidates that are vying for three vacant Council seats in November? What current and/or future issues are of concern to you?

Email your questions to F3’s Executive Director, Michele James at: MJames@friendsofflagstaff.org by August 2.

F3 is a nonpartisan 501 (c)(3) nonprofit and we do not advocate for individual candidates. Our goal is to provide relevant information to the community about local candidates as well as local and state propositions. We encourage civic participation and voting.

Important Information About the 2024 City Council Election

City Council is composed of six council members and the mayor. Although Mayor Becky Daggett is running unopposed for her existing position, F3 will send her our candidate questionnaire.

Council members typically serve four-year terms. Terms will expire this year for current council member Miranda Sweet who is running in 2024 for a second council term. Current council member Jim McCarthy’s term ends this year and he has chosen not to run for another term. Current council member Deborah Harris’ term ends this year as well and she is running as a write-in candidate, meaning that the required number of signatures were not collected by the city’s deadline. The names of write-in candidates will not appear on the ballot.

A total of three council member seats will be filled this November. Six candidates collected the required number of signatures and will be listed on the ballot. Currently there are two candidates who have filed with the city as write-in candidates; this number may increase as the deadline for filing is some weeks away. Council member seats currently filled by Austin Aslan, Khara House, and Lori Matthews will expire in 2026, as will the term of the mayor.

A complete list of the 2024 city council candidates can be found on the City’s website here.

F3 will be holding our City Council Candidate Forumon the evening of Monday, September 23. F3 has held a free candidate forum in every election since 2014, excluding 2020. This year’s forum will be in the “round-robin” format, with attendees separated into small break-out groups and provided with opportunities to ask questions of those individual candidates whose names will be on the ballot. Further information about F3’s Forum will be forthcoming. In the meantime, be sure to put the forum date on your calendars!
