FLAGSTAFF — The free movie screening of “Underwater Dreams” will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 5 at the Coconino High School Main Auditorium, 2801 Izabel St., Flagstaff.
Written and directed by Mary Mazzio, and narrated by Michael Peña, the documentary tells the story of how the sons of undocumented Mexican immigrants learned how to build an underwater robot from Home Depot parts in 2004 and then defeat engineering powerhouse MIT in the process.
The students were from the Falcon Robotics Team from Carl Hayden High School in Phoenix.
A panel discussion with the coaches of the Falcons will follow. The event is free and open to the community with the film recommended for a PG-13 audience.
It is presented by Girl Scouts — Arizona Cactus-Pine, Flagstaff STEMCITY, Coconino County and the CocoNuts robotic team. Refreshments sold will benefit the CocoNuts.
About Underwater Dreams:
The documentary was hailed by Jonathan Alter of The Daily Beast as “the most politically significant documentary film since “Waiting for Superman” and featured on the Colbert Report.
The documentary was released during the summer of 2014 and broadcast simultaneously in English and Spanish on MSNBC and Telemundo.
The actual events inspired the recent movie “Spare Parts” staring George Lopez. Click here for a story about the making of “Spare Parts” in the Arizona Republic.
