FLAGSTAFF — Artists, graphic designers, illustrators, and photographers are wanted to create designs for traffic signal cabinets in two locations:
- The northeast corner of North San Francisco Street and East Butler Avenue
- The northwest corner of East Cedar Avenue and North Gemini Avenue
The idea to beautify the city’s traffic signal cabinets was brought to the city of Flagstaff’s Beautification, Arts & Sciences Program by community member Gaylene Soper, who supported the initiative with funding for a demonstration project.
A request for proposals is now open to artists, graphic designers, illustrators, and photographers who reside in the United States and are 18 years of age or older. The deadline to apply is at 5 p.m. on Aug. 25, 2020.
Traffic signal cabinets are the stainless-steel structures located at every signalized intersection. Artist designs can be printed on 3-M patented vinyl, which is easily maintained, removable, and has been demonstrated as safe technology to use on signal and utility cabinets. The wraps will cover all four sides and the top of each box. Artists are encouraged to use a variety of media, such as photography, painting, collage, digital imagery, etc. to develop their proposed designs that will be transferred to vinyl wraps.
