FLAGSTAFF — Flagstaff’s Mayor Coral Evans and members of the City Council met with Navajo Nation leadership in Window Rock, AZ on September 14, 2017.
The Mayor and Council members Odegaard, McCarthy and Putzova traveled to Window Rock to meet with Navajo Nation President Begaye, Vice President Nez and Speaker of the Council Bates. At this meeting the group discussed issues of mutual importance such as the proposed Veterans Home, the Indigenous Community Forums held in Flagstaff and received an updateregarding the Navajo Nation Human Rights Commission.
“Our meeting with the Navajo Nation’s leadership was both informative and productive” said Mayor Evans. “We identified a number of areas we can continue to work together and I look forward to making progress on issues of mutual concern such as the Veterans Home for northern Arizona.”
This visit supported the City Council’s goal of strengthening partnerships and advancing mutual goals between the City of Flagstaff and Native Nations. Key Tribal Priorities of the City Council for this year include:
- Improve overall communications and engagement with Native Nations as we work in partnership on shared issues and concerns.
- Support implementation priorities of the Memorandum of Understanding between Navajo Nation Human Rights Commission and City of Flagstaff.
- Facilitation of annual meetings with tribal nations and collaborate on agenda development.
