FLAGSTAFF — The city of Flagstaff has partnered with Flagstaff Shelter Services to provide emergency winter overflow shelter bed capacity for families experiencing homelessness. The winter overflow opened Nov. 1.
“The city of Flagstaff is proud to work with Flagstaff Shelter Services and our faith-based community partners to address this very serious issue” said Greg Clifton, City Manager. “One exposure death is too many and we are committed reducing the risks associated with winter weather exposure to our community members currently experiencing homelessness. “
Flagstaff Shelter Services (FSS) is starting the sixth year of their Sanctuary Overflow Program. This program partners with local faith-based congregations to specifically address families experiencing homelessness while the physical shelter provides 177 beds each night annually for individuals experiencing homelessness. The Sanctuary Overflow Program has contributed to a reduction in exposure deaths during northern Arizona’s subzero winter temperatures.
“In 2018, Flagstaff saw zero exposure deaths among individuals experiencing homelessness, a reduction from eight in 2013. A variety of critical partnerships have been instrumental in this significant decrease,” said Ross Altenbaugh, the Executive Director of FSS. “With the expansion of our physical shelter, FSS is able to accommodate both families and individuals experiencing homelessness. Rather than sleeping in their vehicles or places not meant for human habitation, this valuable program will ensure that every neighbor and child are safe from the cold.”
The city and FSS ask the community that if you see someone in need of aid due to winter exposure, assist if possible and if necessary, notify the police department at 9-1-1 or non- emergency 928-774-1414. Additionally, citizens can call the Crisis Response Network at 877- 756-4090 for local resources or a crisis mobile response.
The winter months have increased needs for the following supplies at FSS including toilet paper, socks, large black trash bags, hats, gloves, and coats. Volunteers are always needed, to get involved, email Flagstaff Shelter at hello@flagshelter.org.
