FLAGSTAFF — The Flagstaff City Council will meet on Monday, Aug. 21 at 6:00 p.m. for a presentation by the Sustainability Section of Public Works on the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan.
This is the City of Flagstaff’s first community effort to help prepare for and adapt to projected climate changes and their associated impacts. These preventative measures will help the City to avoid more significant costs in the future.
This Plan will help to achieve the 2017-2019 City Council goal of taking meaningful climate change action. It also furthers values in the regional plan related to energy efficiency, renewable energy, greenhouse gas emissions, and resiliency.
This planning process is scheduled to begin Sept. 2017 and continue through June 2018. The plan is expected to be ready for public comment by fall 2018. The plan will be developed using input from the community, technical experts, a Steering Committee and community partners. Sustainability Section staff will engage community members through the duration of the planning process to better understand community priorities and identify neighborhood-level vulnerabilities. This plan will include input from citizens regarding climate vulnerabilities and what actions they would like the City to take.
This plan will include the following:
- Set a goal and outline the different steps that the community will need to take to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
- Outline actions to prepare for and adapt to climate changes and address specific community vulnerabilities.
- Focus on implementation, alignment with other City efforts, and return on investment.
- Build partnerships with community organizations and institutions.
- Draw on the wealth of indigenous and scientific knowledge in Flagstaff and the technical expertise of City staff.
