Dear Patron of Arts & Culture:

The impacts of COVID-19 and coronavirus are quickly being felt in Flagstaff and throughout Arizona.  This is a challenging time for all of us as we consider the health of ourselves, our families, friends, and the broader community. To help our non-profit partners in the creative sector during this time, the Flagstaff Arts Council is establishing an emergency grant fund to support organizations impacted by canceled events and closures. Please consider giving to this fund and following the other recommendations below.

The Flagstaff Arts Council’s mission is to foster creative opportunity, which we were proud to unveil last week at the 12th Annual Viola Awards (we plan to send a proper recap of that fun-filled evening in a separate email). As we reflect on our new mission, we want to ensure that the temporary challenges we are faced as a community today lead to future opportunities for our artists, makers, creators, aspiring creators, and patrons alike.

The Flagstaff Arts Council is closely monitoring Coconino County Health & Human Services guidance regarding events and will be making case-by-case decisions for specific events with our presenting partners at Coconino Center for the Arts. The health of our patrons, staff, volunteers, and presenting artists is our top priority. We also convened a call of arts and culture organizations yesterday to discuss best practices and how potential closures impact their operations and their patrons. Each organization has been provided resources from the CDC and other authorities on how best to enhance sanitation efforts and enable social distancing at events that remain scheduled.

One thing that is clear, creative sector nonprofits need your support, including the Flagstaff Arts Council. Temporary losses of revenue can be devastating. We want to reemerge as a vibrant creative community as soon as the public health crisis has passed.

If you have the means, please consider:

  1. Donating to the Arts Council’s Art & Science Emergency Grant Fund for COVID-19 related cancellations and closures.
  2. Not requesting a refund if a show or event is canceled. Many of our nonprofits expressed that if they are required to cancel or postpone that they will try to make accommodations at future dates. Some won’t be able to. I hope that you will consider your ticket a donation and investment in the future of the organization and the vitality that they bring to Flagstaff.
  3. Not requesting a refund if you are unable to attend an event due to health concerns. Please stay home if you are in a high-risk group or are ill.
  4. Making an additional donation to your favorite art, science, or culture nonprofit in Flagstaff. Even if “the show goes on” they are all experiencing losses in revenue due to declining attendance.

Thank you for being a valued patron. And, thank you for helping all of the creative sector make Flagstaff vibrant!

Sincerely,

Jonathan Stone
