On November 6th, 2018, Coconino County became the first rural county in AZ to voluntarily change from a partisan-popular election of superior court judges to a merit selection-judicial retention election. This was the result of the Board of Supervisor’s referral of Proposition 416 to the ballot.
The County is now in the implementation phase for the creation of a Coconino County Commission on Trial Court Appointments. Supervisor Fowler is seeking nominating committee members for District 5.
What are the requirements for serving as a Commission Member?
Applicants for the Coconino County Commission on Trial Court Appointments must meet the following Constitutional qualifications to be considered for appointment:
- Must have resided in Arizona for at least five years;
- Must have resided in the supervisorial district in which they are applying for at least one year before being nominated;
- Cannot hold any governmental office, elective or appointive, for profit; and,
- Cannot be a judge, retired judge, or an attorney to practice before the Supreme Court.
Commission members serve a four-year term.
