Message from Jeronimo
Hello Everyone,
Springtime is about renewal a time for life to re-emerge and start the cycle of life all over again. It is the calm after the storm, the dawn of light after prolonged darkness. It is a time to fortify ourselves, and prepare for the challenges of the upcoming year. We have lots of work to do moving forward. We must be prepared for the new monsoon season. Make the tough decisions around local county Redistricting. Make the financial decisions for the county budget for FY 2023. There is a midterm election where our citizens have some decisions to make about their elected officials and different bonds to support programs for our county. As the Board of Supervisors, we have the duty to listen to our constituents and lead our county through these trying times. After severing as supervisor for a year, I am honored to now serve the county as Vice Chair. It is my responsibility to provide leadership to our county staff and the citizen of our county. I am committed to growing into my new role and advocating for all Coconino County.
I hope that you contact me whenever you need to. You can reach my office at 928 679-7162 or email me at jvasquez@coconino.az.gov
In addition, March is Women’s History Month. Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society and has been observed in the United States during the month of March since 1987. I am blessed to have an amazing mother, I am a father to two daughters and adore my two granddaughters. Thank you to all the women in my life. I would not be the man I am today without the care and love of the women in my life.
Redistricting Update – Supervisor Districts
Every ten years, district boundaries for the Board of Supervisors are redrawn to ensure fair and effective representation. In Coconino County, the Board of Supervisors are responsible for drawing supervisory districts. Public participation is essential to this process. The comments received can help the Board to know what the community wants for the changes to the boundaries. I encourage everyone to participate in the public input and look forward to our discussions. Keep in mind you can submits comments until April 12, 2022. Submit email comments to redistricting@coconino.az.gov
Museum Fire Flood Project
On July 21, 2019, the Museum Fire broke out in the Dry Lake Hills area just north of Flagstaff within the Coconino National Forest. The fire ultimately charred 1,961 acres, including a significant portion of the Spruce Wash Watershed. Flood modeling subsequently showed potential flood risk to neighborhoods in Coconino County and the City of Flagstaff. Both the City of Flagstaff and Coconino County Flood Control District immediately took extensive measures and precautions to mitigate damage from flood events.
Throughout the summer of 2021, unprecedented rain events impacted the Museum Fire burn scar and caused multiple rounds of flash flooding in Flagstaff neighborhoods. The City of Flagstaff continues to collaborate with both the public and private partners to lessen the impact of flooding in the affected Flagstaff neighborhoods.
Siren Warning System
A siren warning system will soon be installed in the Museum Flood Area within the City of Flagstaff. The four-tower speaker array system, which synchs with the County’s emergency notification system, can deliver both siren and intelligible voice notifications to outdoor areas.
For more information about these and other projects please visit www.coconino.az.gov/MuseumFire/FloodArea.

February Event Highlights
Renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)
Coconino County was honored to host Navajo Nation president Nez and members of the Navajo tribal council in the signing of a 5 year partnership agreement for road maintenance on tribal lands located within Coconino County.
The Coconino County Board of Supervisors and Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez in Flagstaff to sign a renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Navajo Nation regarding road maintenance and construction.
The MOU between the Nation and Coconino County was first signed in 2016 following a 2014 voter-approved initiative, Proposition 403, that established capital funding to match Navajo Nation funding. It has included support for projects that improve school bus routes and other roads maintained by the County and the Navajo Nation.
The renewed MOU will continue this important partnership. The Board of Supervisors thanks President Jonathan Nez, the Navajo Nation Council, and the people of the Navajo Nation for this valuable partnership and its renewal.
