Volunteer IncomeTax Assistance
United Way of Northern Arizona is again offering the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program in several communities to provide FREE help with filing 2018 income tax returns.
IRS-certified volunteers will be helping complete tax returns for low-to-moderate income households, persons with disabilities and taxpayers with limited English speaking abilities.
Those wishing to use the program should call to schedule an appointment in their community. All tax assistance this year will be done through Scan2Go, in which taxpayers bring their paperwork to their local VITA location to be scanned. A VITA volunteer then completes the tax return and arrangements are made for the taxpayer to either pick up the tax return or have it mailed to them.
Please check the listings below to see when VITA volunteers are available in your community and then call the appropriate number to make your appointment.
All filers need to bring the following with them:
  • Valid picture ID of taxpayer, spouse (if filing jointly), and dependents
  • Social security or ITIN cards for all household members
  • Proof of income (all W2 and 1099 forms)
  • 1095-A form if you purchased health care from the marketplace
  • 1098T and college statement for students with qualified post-secondary education expenses
  • Name, address and tax ID number of your child care provider and the amount paid to the provider last year (if applicable)
  • Deductible expenses, such as mortgage, property tax and donations
  • A copy of last year’s return is also helpful
This is not a complete list of all VITA locations. If you do not see your community, contact UWNA at 928.773.9318.
  • Flagstaff: The VITA program will once again be offered at both Coconino High School, 2801 N. Izabel St. (south entrance) and Goodwill of Central & Northern Arizona, 4308 E. Route 66. Call 888-635-0545 for an appointment.

New Session of Basic Business Empowerment is Starting Soon!
Coconino County Community Services’ (CCCS) is beginning their 12-week (36-hour) Basic Business Empowerment (BBE) training (www.coconino.az.gov/bbe). This training is for Coconino County residents who want to start, improve, and/or expand a micro-business — five or fewer employees and typically requiring less than $35,000 of start-up capital. Our BBE trainings are now facilitated through the Coconino Small Business Development Center (SBDC) which allows participants continued access to SBDC assistance after they complete the BBE course.
The next BBE training will be presented 6-9pm, Tuesday evenings, May 14th through July 30th, at the County Health and Community Services Building, 2625 N. King St., Flagstaff, AZ 86004.
Prior to approving an applicant for enrollment prospective candidates need to also complete a short online assessment of their entrepreneurial knowledge/capacity by clicking on the following weblink (https://www.bdc.ca/en/articles-tools/entrepreneur-toolkit/business-assessments/pages/self-assessment-test-your-entrepreneurial-potential.aspx). We use this to score and gauge how suited potential BBE candidates are for business start-up and ownership. After completing your assessment please print, scan, and attach (or copy and paste) your total and section scores into a reply email to our BBE staff or into a Word document attached to it. (Please note that the assessment website is not connected with the BBE program so there is no need to register or provide them your e-address, unless you want to receive solicitation from them.)
Lastly, your registration is not complete until CCCS approves your application and receives any required supporting documentation and your $125 registration fee. The last page of the application requests financial information required by our funding agencies and is also used to determine eligibility for a 50% BBE training scholarship, and to pre-screen eligibility for an Individual Development Accounts (IDA) match saving grant opportunity (www.coconino.az.gov/ida). The class fee should be paid in person with cash or check to reserve your seat in the class. Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action)
