WINSLOW — Snowdrift Art Space, Flagstaff Nuestras Raíces and the Winslow Chamber of Commerce presented a Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration on Nov. 2 , 2013 at Snowdrift Art Space in downtown Winslow.

Members of the public gathered at Snowdrift Art Space on Nov. 1 to begin setting up the altars / ofrendas for display. The altars included flowers, candles, incense, sugar skulls and statues of saints as well as pictures, personal items and favorite food or drinks of the departed.

The public event held Nov. 2 featured a sugar skull-making workshop presented by Flagstaff Nuestras Raíces, a performance by the Northland Pioneer College Folklorico Dancers, local composer Richard Haymes performing an original composition on the harmonium, with the event concluding with a traditional Día de los Muertos procession from Snowdrift to the Hubbell/Winslow Visitors Center along the First Street Pathway.

The procession ended near the visitor’s center with the burning of an urn filled with prayers for the departed that event attendees have added along the way.

Support for the event was provided by Snowdrift Art Space, the Winslow Chamber of Commerce, and Flagstaff Nuestras Raíces, which is dedicated to promoting Hispanic culture and history through events, gatherings, and the performing and visual arts.
