Places to go, gifts to buy this holiday
On the lookout for last-minute Día de los Muertos items for your ofrenda? Maybe a road trip to Casa Latina in Jerome or Mexidona in downtown or westside Sedona will help you find that delicate La Catrina sculpture or colorful ceramic skull. Whatever you are looking for, from shops in the Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village in Sedona to thousands of luminarias from Sedona to Phoenix and beyond, there are plenty of places to go this holiday season in Arizona.
Education
LAUNCH Flagstaff has hired its first project director. Paul Kulpinski is resigning his position as a member of the Flagstaff Unified School District governing board to take the lead on this newly formed collaborative group that will first seek to raise pre-kindergarten and pre-college preparedness rates, areas of key concerns to the growing local Hispanic community.
Travel
Looking for a way to take the edge off this busy holiday season? How about a leisurely hike in Coconino County or the White Mountains, enjoying upcoming seasonal events or even a low-key New Year’s Eve at the Grand Canyon.
What’s Cooking?
The young person’s book “Too Many Tamales” by Gary Soto seems to sum up the holiday cooking season for some. But while we often say, “Never again,” many are drawn back into the kitchen to make this traditional holiday treat. Just be careful not to get too involved with the politics of how to make the perfect tamale. Tensions could rise to the boiling point in a tamale pot.
